The Southwest Airlines Showcase at Cedar Crest kicks off from Nov. 13-15, featuring a golf tournament that attracts the nation’s top amateur golfers. “There has not been an event like this that has been created for Black golf in this way,” said Ira Molayo, Cedar Crest Golf Course General Manager to wfaa.com. Among them is Shyla Brown, a young talent from McKinney, Texas who hones her skills at Stonebridge Ranch’s Dye Golf Course.
Discipline is composed of control, training, and persistence, and Shyla Brown, a high-level junior golfer, emphasizes the importance of consistency in the game. At just 15 years old, Brown holds the title of the number one-ranked African American Junior Golfer. Her journey into golf began at the age of 8, influenced by her parents’ involvement in the sport.
Having ascended the ranks, Brown is now one of four nationally ranked high school golfers competing in the Southwest Airlines Showcase at Cedar Crest. The significance of the event, held at a venue with historical ties to pioneers like Charles Sifford, holds special meaning for Brown as she follows in the footsteps of those who broke barriers, such as Sifford, who broke the color barrier for the PGA Tour.
Brown has carved out her own path, earning a spot on the 2023 American Junior Golf All-Star Team and becoming only the second African American in history to receive such an award. She recognizes the responsibilities that come with the blessings she’s received, citing the adage, “To much is given, much is required.”
Supported by her family, coaches, and fellow golfers, Brown finds inspiration in their successes, propelling her to strive for excellence. Despite juggling school, marching band, practice, and tournaments, Brown remains focused on her ultimate goal – not just to turn professional but to become one of the greatest in the sport.
In Brown’s words, “I want to get through college, go professional, and not just join the tour but be one of the greatest.”
