The Swing Into Their Dreams Foundation awards academic scholarships each year to deserving students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The annual application period opens in April, with all materials—including a completed FAFSA—due by July 20 for priority consideration.
A scholarship selection committee, typically comprised of at least six members representing the foundation staff, HBCU faculty, and board directors, meets twice annually during the spring semester. Committee members independently review and score each applicant’s personal essay before meeting to finalize awards. Essays are judged based on three weighted categories: overall content (40%), intended program of study (40%), and community or volunteer service (20%). The committee evaluates writing effort and substance over strict grammar or style accuracy.
Award decisions incorporate additional factors when necessary, such as demonstrated financial need (based on FAFSA data), academic performance, and the essay score. Final decisions are overseen by the foundation’s board of directors and scholarship committee leaders.
Successful applicants receive notification via email or mail, including award amounts and donor recognition where applicable. To receive the funds, scholars must return a signed agreement, submit a thank-you note to donors, register for classes, and attend the awards ceremony—typically held in October or via Zoom. Scholarships over $1,000 are disbursed in three installments across summer, fall, and spring terms, contingent on academic enrollment.
