Nearly 50 enthusiastic members of the Southside Hackers golf group traveled from Chicago to spend their June 2025 golf trip at Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio. The event took place from Thursday, June 19 through Sunday, June 22, 2025, with two full days of play held on the historic course.
The group proudly wore shirts embroidered with the Clearview Golf Club emblem as a tribute to the legacy of course founders William “Bill” Powell and his wife, Marcella Powell. As the only golf course in the United States designed, built, owned, and operated by an African American, Clearview holds a special place in the history of golf and American sports. Built in 1946 during a time of widespread segregation, the course stands today as a symbol of resilience, inclusion, and passion for the game.
Clearview is now under the continued stewardship of the Powells’ children. Renee Powell, a pioneering LPGA professional and one of the most respected figures in golf, serves as Head Golf Professional. Her brother, Larry Powell, manages the course as Superintendent. Together, they are committed to preserving their family’s vision while mentoring future generations.
“It was a joy to welcome them to America’s Course,” said Renee Powell on her Facebook post, expressing her appreciation for the Southside Hackers’ visit and recognition of Clearview’s enduring significance.
The weekend offered more than just rounds of golf; it provided a meaningful experience rooted in history, camaraderie, and the continued mission of equality in the game. Events like this underscore how Clearview remains not only a functioning golf course, but also a cultural landmark that honors the power of perseverance and community.
