(Jackson Park Golf Association November Newsletter) – On October 28, 2024, over 200 attendees gathered at the historic South Shore Cultural Center’s Robeson Theater for the screening of ACCESS: Golfers by Day, Fighters by Night. This first episode, titled “Golfers by Day, Fighters by Night,” launched the documentary series presented by 99 Years Studio Entertainment and Teach Our Children, Inc., founded by Tracy Raoul, who also serves as the President of the Jackson Park Golf Association (JPGA).
The series showcases the powerful journey of Joe Louis—a world champion in the boxing ring and a trailblazer in the world of golf. The opening episode sets the stage by delving into Joe Louis’s remarkable boxing career and his eventual transition into golf, revealing his passion for the sport and his desire to break down racial barriers. The documentary poignantly explores the societal landscape and entrenched racism that African American golfers faced, a fight Louis undertook courageously as he pressured the PGA to end its “Caucasian-only clause.” Interviews with golfers across generations provide moving insights into the endurance, talent, and resilience of African Americans in the sport—from the early 20th century to the present day.
The screening included heartfelt remarks from Director, Tracy Raoul, Center Director, Andrea Adams, and prominent figures in the Chicago golf community. Attendees were moved by the series’ powerful narratives, which resonated deeply with the audience. Many attendees were especially moved by the stories of pioneers like Walter Speedy, Ted Rhodes, Charlie Sifford, and Lee Elder. One viewer noted, “The stories of the pioneers’ struggle and persistence to get access to golf facilities were inspiring.” Another remarked on the film’s ability to transcend golf itself: “The subject matter may originally seem obtuse to an individual that is not a golf enthusiast (like myself). However, the way in which it was done made it an engaging film to watch while maintaining my full attention.”
ACCESS brings the stories of these unsung heroes to life, reminding us all of the importance of inclusion and equality in the game we love. This powerful documentary serves as a testament to Joe Louis’s legacy and the generations of African Americans who continue to shape the sport. We look forward to sharing future episodes of this inspiring series with you. Stay tuned as we celebrate these groundbreaking contributions to the sport of golf!
