Ronald Davis, a passionate advocate for youth development, has dedicated his life to making a difference through the power of golf. As the founder of The GLOVe Foundation, he has created a platform that not only introduces inner-city youth to the game of golf but also instills valuable life skills, values, and opportunities for their personal growth and success.
The GLOVe Foundation is the acronym for Golf, Life-Skills, Opportunity, Values and Enrichment (power of e). It operates as a non-profit organization with an Alabama Incorporation and IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Davis, along with his esteemed board members, all local Mobile residents, comprised of retired executives, educators, entrepreneurs, scientists, and bankers, work tirelessly to mentor and guide the youth in Mobile, Alabama.
“We are in the process of creating a national advisory board composed of prominent individuals from the southeast region (Alabama, Georgia and Florida),” says Davis, who has identified 5 individuals to serve in this capacity and they will be announced at a later time. The foundation’s primary focus is introducing golf to inner-city youth, regardless of their ethnicity. Davis firmly believes that teaching soft skills alongside traditional education will improve their chances of leading successful and fulfilling lives. Golf, unlike most sports, offers a lifelong pursuit that transcends age, making it a perfect avenue for personal development.
Through strategic partnerships and affiliations, The GLOVe Foundation has been able to provide impactful programs and opportunities for its participants. The foundation has been a proud LPGA/USGA Girls Golf site since 2012, with an annual enrollment of over 200 girls, predominantly African American. Multiple grants, such as the Participation Grant, Sandy Labauve, and Renee Powell, have recognized and supported their exceptional work. “It’s because of our applications and awarding of grants, we are currently able to provide the lessons to the participants at no cost,” said Davis.
“Our E-Leader (Allyson Bell) will be participating in the 2023 US Women Open: “Day At The Hay”, at Pebble Beach. She also serves on the National E-Leaders Board of Directors and has been affiliated with our program since the age of 5,” said Davis proudly.
Collaboration with the Mobile County Commission has been instrumental in organizing the “LIKE ME!” Clinic/Exhibition, which features professional golfers from the EPSON and APGA tours. This event allows inner-city youth to witness individuals who resemble them excel in the game of golf, inspiring them to believe in their own abilities. And, it is working.
Furthermore, The GLOVe Foundation has forged partnerships with organizations like the American Golf Industry Coalition, the Golf Course Builders Association of America, and the Gulf Coast Chapter of the First Tee. In 2019, they became a programmatic partner with the City of Mobile’s Parks and Recreation Department. “Through this affiliation, we have complete access to the city’s municipal golf course. These affiliations have brought in valuable resources, including grants, junior golf club sets, access to municipal golf courses, and First Tee programming, said Davis. “All of our volunteer coaches have been Level 1 certified and will begin offering First Tee programming either late summer or early fall of this year. We will more than likely begin charging a fee to participate because of the nature of the First Tee fee structure.”
“Golf Course Builders Association of America has provided us with 20 sets of junior golf clubs over the past 5 or more years through their Sticks-For-Kids. Because of this generous contribution, parents do not have to invest in golf clubs until the child illustrates a profound interest and skill development.”
Despite the remarkable achievements, 66-year-old Davis acknowledges that space remains the foundation’s biggest challenge. To address this, plans are underway to build a golf training/education support facility and a nine-hole executive course. Grants and fundraising activities are being pursued to turn this vision into a reality.
Ronald Davis’s journey has been shaped by his humble upbringing in Selma, Alabama, and his own experiences as a college athlete and educator. He draws inspiration from the mentors and supportive community that guided him through life’s challenges. Now retired after 40 years of service, Davis devotes his days to growing The GLOVe Foundation and expanding its positive impact on the lives of countless young individuals.
The GLOVe Foundation under Davis’ leadership is a shining example of how golf can transcend its boundaries to empower and uplift the next generation. Through their dedication, mentorship, and provision of opportunities, they are creating a pathway for inner-city youth to discover their potential, develop valuable skills, and believe in a future filled with success and happiness.
