Tiffany Powell
(May 22, 2011)–Being culturally aware in today’s world is definitely an asset and Tiffany Powell is way ahead of the curve. A resident of Kenner, Louisiana, Powell holds degrees in Spanish and Religion from Amherst College in Massachusetts and Philanthropic Studies from Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy. Through her love of language and cultural studies her educational pursuits have taken her overseas to Foreign Affairs College in Beijing, China.
Powell is a real estate broker by trade and enjoys a variety of community development work.
She is the Founder of Say Yes! Women, Wellness and Recreation, a campaign designed to encourage women to recreate.
“I am very interested in creating opportunities for women to enjoy golf and other activities that allow them to invest in themselves, their health and well-being,” says Powell.
“I also like to play golf with friends in my New Orleans area where everyone is looking forward to the opening and redevelopment of local golf courses, in particular the Joseph M. Bartholomew Municipal Golf Course located in Ponchartrain Park. The historical course was designed by Bartholomew an African American.
“My golf journey has been wholly serendipitous. After Hurricane Katrina, there was a lot of military presence in New Orleans and I met a nice lady in my tennis class who was working with the Coast Guard.
“She was always talking about golfing with her dad and during our conversation, we promised that someday we would play golf together. Then, it just so happens that before she left town, the TPC was hosting its American Express Play Golf America Womens Golf Month event and we were able to make good on our promise. This was my very first introduction to golf and much to my surprise, I was smitten,” says Powell.
Powell has taken formal golf lessons with the renown ‘King of Swing’ Glennon Bazzle, USGTF (Birmingham, AL) and recalls getting her first golf clubs and shoes, “A red pair and blue pair.”

“I signed up for my very first golf tournament at an African American Golfer’s Digest (AAGD) annual outing, I was absolutely inspired to learn how many lady golfing groups there are, including Sisters Across America Inc. And, at the AAGD diversity exhibit booth at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando (FL) I was introduced to Mikell Johnson,Ph.D., author, The African American Woman Golfer: Her Legacy, and the legendary caddie, Mr. Alfred “Rabbit” Dyer. My overall experience in golf has been very positive and personally rewarding,” says Powell.
Powell is definitely succeeding in her rounds and has proudly won 2nd Place in Dale Brock’s Fairplay Foundation Celebrity Open (New Orleans) while paired with some fellows from Mississippi.
“I was rolling those puts in on that day!” says Powell with her charming smile.
She also made a name for herself at the Jimmy Garvin Legacy Foundation/Southwest Florida Scholarship Golf Invitational where she won a fancy watch for “closest to the pin” along with other neat gifts.
“I am growing more and more in love with the golf community where I’ve met many generous and charitable individuals.”
