After experiencing flu-like symptoms, 48-year-old Tiger Woods withdrew from the Genesis Invitational in California. Despite returning to the PGA Tour with a one-over par opening round at the Riviera Country Club, Woods felt too unwell to continue, withdrawing after six holes on the second day of the tournament. Rob McNamara, executive vice president of TGR Ventures, explained that Woods began feeling dizzy while playing due to a fever and dehydration. However, he is now “much, much better” after receiving treatment and is expected to be released soon.
This setback comes as Woods continues to adapt to ankle fusion surgery he underwent last year. Despite showing moments of brilliance, including a birdie on the first hole of the second round, Woods’ struggle with back spasms and subsequent withdrawal highlight the ongoing challenges he faces in his return to competitive golf.
Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth faced his own disappointment, being disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. Despite these setbacks, Patrick Cantlay leads the tournament with a commanding five-shot advantage, while Rory McIlroy managed to make the cut after a challenging start. The Genesis Invitational is being held Feb 15–18, 2024 at Riviera Golf Club in Pacific Palisades, California with a $20,000,000 purse.
