The United Black Golfers Association Inc. (UBGA) is entering a new chapter as its founding president, Vernel Bennett, prepares to step down at the end of 2025 after more than a decade of dedicated leadership. Founded on March 14, 2014, UBGA has grown into a respected organization that promotes the game of golf within African American communities, focusing on accessibility, education, camaraderie, and youth engagement.

Vernel Bennett has served as president since the organization’s inception, guiding UBGA through its formative years and helping it evolve into a vibrant community of golf enthusiasts. Under his leadership, UBGA has not only increased participation among Black golfers but also provided mentorship, scholarships, and opportunities for younger generations to experience the game.

“Leading UBGA for the past 11 years has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” said Bennett. “As I prepare to step aside, I do so with confidence in the new generation of leaders who will take this organization even further.” Bennett stated, “Among the proudest things we have, we’ve trademarked our name, our logo, and the acronym UBGA, because this association was established for the long haul.”

In recognition of his service and impact, the organization’s annual scholarship event has been renamed the UBGA Vernel Bennett Golf Classic. This honor reflects both his leadership and his commitment to fostering educational opportunities through golf.

Currently, Vice President Jacques LeAndre is managing the organization during the transition period. Bennett, who turns 74 this September, felt the time was right to pass the baton. “I believe in knowing when to lead and when to make room for others,” he shared. “I’ll remain an active member of UBGA, but it’s time for new voices and ideas to lead the way.”

As UBGA prepares for the future, it continues to celebrate a strong foundation built on community, excellence, and the tireless efforts of its founding president. For more information on UBGA visit https://ubga.org.
