David Daniels, a recent graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA, is poised to embark on his professional journey after receiving a scholarship from the United Black Golfers Association (UBGA). The UBGA, an organization committed to supporting African Americans in the world of golf, presented Daniels with a $750.00 scholarship on 8/7/2018, as part of its mission to empower young individuals pursuing higher education. The UBGA is a Laurelton Queens-based Association that was formed on March 3, 2014, as a 501(C)(3) not-for-profit corporation by Vernel Bennett, President and Co-Founder, and Jacques Leandre, Esq., Vice President and Co-Founder. Leandre is also a Morehouse graduate.
The association has been instrumental in providing financial assistance to talented students like Daniels, enabling them to pursue their educational dreams. “Daniels expressed his gratitude for the scholarship and was appreciative of the support he received from the UBGA family,” said Bennett in a statement. “The UBGA’s commitment to recognizing the potential and achievements of young individuals has been a driving force in their efforts to create opportunities within the golf community.”
Daniels majored in Political Science and minored in International Studies and graduated on May 21 from Morehouse College, a historically Black college renowned for its academic excellence and commitment to cultivating future leaders. Established in 1867, Morehouse College has been a beacon of hope, providing transformative education to generations of African American students. Its illustrious alumni include prominent figures like Martin Luther King Jr., Spike Lee, and Samuel L. Jackson.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Daniels discovered a passion for golf during his time at Morehouse College. Over the past two years, he has honed his skills on the green, finding joy in playing alongside his grandfather. Golf has not only become a recreational activity for Daniels but also an avenue for personal growth and connection with his family. Daniels will be addressing UBGA 2023 scholarship awardees at this year’s Golf Classic, at Harbor Links on July 31.
As Daniels begins his career in New York, he reflects on the journey that led him here. Despite not yet being employed, he has set his sights on joining either the New York Police Department or the Metropolitan Transit Authority. Completing his degree was a crucial step in achieving his professional aspirations, and he proudly acknowledges the role that education has played in shaping his future.
At 22 years old, Daniels stands on the cusp of an exciting chapter in his life. Armed with a degree from Morehouse College and the support of the UBGA, he is ready to make his mark in the professional world. Overall UBGA has provided $44,600 to 60 students (2016-2023).
