Powell Hall is a new residence hall at the University of St. Andrews named in honor of Renee Powell, American professional golfer and the second African American woman ever to play on the LPGA Tour.  The beautiful five-story building is situated adjacent to Agnes Blackadder Hall on the North Haugh, near various science buildings on the campus.  It is also located near to the Sports Centre and is only a 15-minute walk to the town center. The modern hall is planned to open with a grand ribbon-cutting ceremony in September 2018 with Ms. Powell in attendance.  Friends and fans interested in traveling over for the ribbon-cutting ceremony should contact Debert Cook at 212-571-6559 or email debertcook@aol.com

The University of St Andrews is a British public research university in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland that was founded in 1413. It is Scotland’s first university, the oldest of the four ancient universities of Scotland, and the third oldest university in the English-speaking world.  The international university has staff and student body from over 140 countries, and hundreds attend for a Study Abroad experience at this 100th-largest university in the United Kingdom by enrollment (10,330 total students (2016/17).

The brand new Powell Hall offers self-catered en-suite undergraduate accommodation with 205 rooms, each with double beds (4 feet wide), situated along corridors. Kitchens (typically shared between five students) are dotted along each corridor and include a dining and lounge area.  All the bedrooms are allocated as single occupancy and have their own shower room. Two of the rooms and their associated kitchens and lounges have been designed for wheelchair access.

Location
Powell Hall is located on the North Haugh on the western edge of town, near the Faculty of Science buildings and the Sports Centre. From here, you are only a 15-minute walk to the center of town and local amenities, and only a 10-minute walk to the beautiful West Sands beach as well as the Old Course golf links.  Many students choose to use bikes to travel around campus to save money on public transport, live a healthy lifestyle, and contribute to sustainability.

The Agnes Blackadder Hall is adjacent to Powell Hall and the residents of each hall will be free to share each other’s facilities, social spaces, games rooms, etc. The Agnes Blackadder Committee and extended wardennial team organize events to encompass both buildings and create a strong community feel.

The brand new Powell Hall building offers various facilities for students to use for studying or socializing including:

Laundry
The laundry room contains washers and dryers which are card-operated. You can buy a card from the card dispensers in the main foyer of Agnes Blackadder Hall which you pre-load with credit via an online portal. A top-up machine is also located in the laundry room. An adjacent drying room provides ironing facilities.

Main Social Space
A large open space on the ground floor is fitted with an assortment of tables, chairs and sofas for relaxing, socializing, holding events and informal studying.

Study Spaces
As well as informal study areas on the ground floor, dedicated study rooms are available on each floor of the building, equipped with data points and an assortment of whiteboards and TV screens to assist students with their presentation work.

Private dining room
Residents are able to book this room – fitted with a kitchen, tables and chairs – for their own special events, like a birthday party or simply a special meal with friends.

Kitchen and Lounges
Each kitchen and lounge is allocated to five students. The kitchen is equipped with an induction cooking hob, an oven, a large fridge-freezer, a microwave, a kettle and a generous amount of storage cupboards.

The kitchen includes a dining and lounge area with table and chairs, as well as sofas and a coffee table to allow students to relax in their small community. A TV is provided in the lounge area, although it will be the students’ responsibility to purchase a TV license should they wish to use the TV.

Cinema Room
The cinema room is an informal room with a large TV screen and comfortable seating.

Game room
The games room is a large room with some seating and various games for relaxing anytime.

Music room
The music room is a sound-insulated room for residents to practice their own musical instruments individually or with a small group.

Residence fees for 2018 are slated to be $9,132.70 (£6,954).  The University has a block insurance policy for students’ possessions while they are in the Residence (room only) and while their possessions are in storage in the Residence during vacation periods. The Residential Services Manager is Lynsey Martin and Deputy Residential Services Manager Mark Sherriff.

Saints Golf is the performance golf programme at the University of St Andrews. According to its website, “Our aim is to attract the brightest and best student golfers to the Home of Golf, where they can pursue their golfing ambitions to the highest level whilst simultaneously studying for a degree at one of the finest academic institutions in the world.” The players all have Links Tickets, meaning they have full access 365 days per year to all 7 courses at the Links.  The current Director of Golf is David Watt.

The University of St Andrews sits between award-winning beaches and internationally renowned golf courses ensuring the town center remains vibrant and compact. The university has residences located throughout the town so that everything is within walking distance and students feel very much at the heart of the community. All University halls of residence have their own wardennial team, who live within the hall and are trained and available to support students in a range of matters – from advice on academic matters, through to first aid. New students will meet their warden and team of assistant wardens during their moving in weekend.  The University of St Andrews is a charity registered in Scotland.

Powell, age 72, played on the U.S.-based LPGA Tour and is currently head professional at her family’s Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio. Powell has received a plethora of awards during her  career and was named 2003 PGA First Lady of Golf and recognized as an “Outstanding Leader in Golf” by African American Golfer’s Digest (2009).

The University is known worldwide as a unique place to study and live. The campus is situated on the east coast of Scotland, where many students cross over beautiful golf courses and pristine beaches while making their way to class.  Contemporaries who attended the University include Prince William and Kate Middleton. William graduated with a master of arts degree in geography, Middleton with a master of arts degree in art history (circa 2003).

The University has a staunch reputation across the world and offers a diverse range of social activities, including over 140 student societies and 50 sports clubs. Historic buildings are juxtaposed against the modern facilities. Students who attend the University of St. Andrews have memories to cherish for a lifetime.
