“Akila Calligan joins Women of Color Golf (WOCG) as our HBCU College Ambassador Intern,” said WOCG Founder Clemmie Perry. Akila is a current graduate student at Texas Southern University where she is working towards her Masters in Sport Studies and Sport Leadership. In her WOCG internship, Akila will have the distinct pleasure of working directly with Ms. Clemmie Perry and with Maiya Lyn-Ah-Ping, the current WOCG-Florida A&M University College Ambassador, to establish the WOCG College Ambassador Program criteria and mentee guidelines.
In addition, Akila will be invited to meet key golf industry leaders and stakeholders and attend strategy meetings and golf industry webinars to enhance her overall career & business knowledge about the sport of golf.
Akila is currently an Educator/Girls Coach and is excited about gaining experience with WOCG as she is transitioning her career into the professional sports arena. She is very enthusiastic about her WOCG internship as this is her first exposure to the game of golf. She believes in the value and importance of uplifting all women, particularly women of color and is eager to assist in all of WOCG initiatives and programs.
“I believe the work Clemmie Perry is doing with Women of Color Golf is extremely necessary and vital to exposing and bringing awareness to a sport that lacks representation of minorities, women and girls of color in the game of golf,” says Akila.
“Akila is going to be a wonderful asset to WOCG and we are looking forward to all she brings to the organization, said Ms. Perry.
