In 1954, against the backdrop of the Great Migration of African Americans from the South following World War II, the Western States Golf Association (WSGA) emerged. Born out of the injustices of bigotry and racism, this organization provided a platform for Black golfers to come together, play, compete, and socialize, all while confronting the pervasive segregation of the era.
Just a year after its inception, the WSGA held its inaugural championship at Sharp Park Golf Course, located south of San Francisco. Over 100 players from the charter clubs participated, marking a historic moment for the association. Sharp Park, previously infamous for denying Black players tee times, now hosted five days of thrilling competition. This event symbolized a significant step forward in the fight against racial discrimination in the sport.
Since that landmark championship, the WSGA has continued to hold its annual tournament, showcasing the talent and resilience of Black golfers across the Western United States. The tournament has traveled to various locations over the years, providing opportunities for players to compete and build camaraderie.
As the WSGA prepares to celebrate its 70th annual golf championship, golf enthusiasts are invited to join in the festivities at the Robert Trent Jones – Capitol Hill golf course in Prattville, Alabama, from June 20th to 22nd, 2024.
