Willie Leon McGee holds his proclamation from The City of Atlanta (Ga)

It was a grand 78th birthday celebration for Coach Willie Leon McGee, as he graciously accepted a proclamation for commendable public service from the Atlanta City Council. The presentation took place during the 11:00 am service at Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Ga., on Sunday, August 26, 2019.
“This is one of the best birthdays that I have had in my lifetime,” said Coach Mcgee. “All of it was unexpected. I was just a recipient, and I give all thanks to God. It was spirit motivated. I am always available to help my students at the golf academy at the church.” As Vice President and Director of Player Development, McGee has a vast amount of students who play at all levels.
In attendance to witness the tribute was McGee’s wife Audrey, along with his golf mentee and spiritual daughter, Lori Thomas. Thomas is as an international flight attendant with Delta Airlines who started taking lessons with McGee about 8 years ago as a beginner. “She was very interested in learning the game, and now she is almost an everyday player–especially when she is not working,” said McGee.
Golf mentee Thomas said, “Having Coach Leon McGee makes me extremely happy and excited because he deserves such an amazing honor for being such a giving person! He is always helping so many, it’s time he is honored as well. I support him because he is such a giving person. He again deserves the award.”
The Golf Academy at Cascade United Methodist Church has been in existence for over a decade and utilizes the game of golf to promote family unity, leadership development, good citizenship and spiritual growth. Cascade’s Golf Academy is a charter member of the U.S. Golf Association and is governed by their Rules of Play and Citizenship.
The CUMC Golf Academy promotes the game of golf through three components: adult beginner’s classes, mentoring throughout the season and league play three times weekly during the season.
Following the presentation, several church members took McGee out to dinner where everyone continued the joyful birthday celebration.
