Wishing Carl Jackson a Wonderful 78th Birthday

by AAGD Staff

Carl Jackson, one of the most respected caddies in golf history, celebrates his 78th birthday today. Born on March 31, 1946, Jackson’s journey in golf is a testament to hard work, dedication, and an enduring love for the game. His name is most famously associated with Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, where he caddied for over 50 years. His legacy is particularly tied to two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, forming one of the most cherished player-caddie partnerships in the sport’s history.

Jackson grew up in Augusta, Georgia, in a time when caddying was one of the few ways young Black men could get involved in golf. He began working as a caddie at Augusta National at just 14 years old, navigating the prestigious course with skill and insight. Over time, he became known for his deep knowledge of Augusta’s fairways and greens, a talent that would serve him well throughout his career.

Reflecting on his start, Jackson once said, “Augusta National was my classroom, and I studied every inch of it.” His ability to read the undulating greens and unpredictable slopes made him a valuable asset to many professional golfers who sought his guidance during the Masters.

Masters Legacy and Partnership with Ben Crenshaw

One of Jackson’s defining career moments came when he teamed up with Ben Crenshaw at the Masters in 1976. Their partnership lasted decades, highlighted by Crenshaw’s victories in 1984 and 1995. Jackson’s expertise and calming presence played a crucial role in both wins.

The 1995 Masters win was especially emotional. Just days before the tournament, Crenshaw’s longtime coach, Harvey Penick, passed away. Despite his grief, Crenshaw leaned on Jackson’s steady hand, and together they navigated the course to a dramatic victory. After sinking the final putt, Crenshaw broke down in tears, later saying, “I had Carl with me all the way.”

Jackson, reflecting on that week, stated, “That tournament was meant to be. We had a special connection, and I could feel we were playing for something bigger than golf.”

Influence and Recognition

Beyond his work with Crenshaw, Jackson was a mentor to many younger caddies and players. His wisdom and professionalism helped change the perception of caddies from simple bag carriers to strategic partners in the game. Even after stepping away from full-time caddying, he remained a respected voice in golf.

His contributions were acknowledged by many, including Augusta National, which honored his service and impact on the game. In 2021, the Carl’s Kids Foundation was established in his name to support young golfers and caddies from underprivileged backgrounds, continuing his legacy of giving back to the sport.

Jackson once said, “Golf has given me so much, and I just want to help the next generation find their way like I did.” His journey from a young Augusta caddie to a Masters legend is an inspiration to many.

As Carl Jackson turns 78 today, the golf world celebrates not just his remarkable career but the wisdom, heart, and legacy he leaves behind. Happy birthday Carl!
