The Women In Golf Foundation (WIGF) hosted its 26th annual National Women’s Collegiate Golf Championship April 12-14 at Callaway Gardens and Resort in Pine Mountain, GA. This years theme was “Adapting to Change – The Power of the Pivot!”
The classic/championship is a 3-day invitational event where selected women’s college teams are invited to participate and play for the Women’s Collegiate Championship. The trophy–Renee Powell Cup, honoring Renee Powell, a pioneer African American Female professional golfer– is presented to the winning team to display for the year that they reign as champions.
“2021 has been a challenging and an exciting year so far,” says the organization’s Founder and President LaJean Gould. With COVID-19 locking down many events over the past year, the the organization’s major fundraising event was a grand success.
“This year had its special challenges that required us to modify all of our processes to account for COVID-19 Protocols. In spite of all the challenges, the WIGF team adapted to the changes required, committed, implemented the plan and pulled it off!” said Gould.
“I am so proud of the WIGF team, which includes all of our sponsors, contributors and volunteers. COVID – 19 sent us into uncharted territory, but we are better for it. Thank you all for believing in our work.”
WIGF held its first Virtual Professional Development Session using the Virtual Platform “SWERVE” thanks to our Platinum Eagle Sponsor – AEIO. All of our Platinum, Gold and Silver sponsors contributed to the panels discussing our theme: Adapting to Change – There is Power in the Pivot!
The event presents opportunities for professional development and for the college women to play a round of golf with Business professionals. This year, live scoring was provided by GolfStat.
“Congratulations to North Carolina A&T State University – the winner and repeat holder of the Renee Powell Cup!,” said Gould during the presentation.
Alabama State University won 2nd Place and Delaware State University came in 3rd Place. Christyn Carr – a Junior at North Carolina A&T, the low medalist, earned an exemption to a LPGA Symetra Tour tournament in Davidson, North Carolina in May and will play in the John Shippen later this month.
“The scores this year were exceptional,” states Gould. “25 out of 29 players had rounds that qualified as a Playing Ability Test (PAT) for the LPGA teaching professional program. Click here to see a summary of the scores: Team and Player – Women’s Collegiate Champ.
