The 2025 Black Student-Athlete Summit concluded in Chicago, marking a decade of empowering and inspiring student-athletes through education, connection, and personal growth. Hosted at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, May 21-24, the four-day event brought together over 1,300 participants—including student-athletes, coaches, athletic administrators, and higher education leaders—for a transformative experience centered on preparing Black student-athletes for success beyond the playing field.

Dr. Leonard Moore, Founder, Black Student-Athlete Summit

Founded by Dr. Leonard Moore, a professor and higher education trailblazer known for his work in leadership and racial equity, the Summit began as a visionary initiative to support Black student-athletes in their academic and professional journeys. Dr. Moore’s passion for student development and institutional accountability laid the foundation for what has now become the largest and most influential gathering of its kind. His commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by Black athletes has helped shape a national dialogue on what holistic support for student-athletes should truly look like.

Now in its 10th year, the Summit has evolved into more than a conference—it is a cultural movement. It redefines the narrative for the 98% of Black student-athletes who will not play professionally but are poised to become leaders in business, education, entrepreneurship, and public service.

The 2025 event featured a compelling keynote from ESPN analyst and Super Bowl champion Ryan Clark, who shared lessons from his journey in sports and beyond. Dr. Zaldwaynaka Scott, President of Chicago State University, welcomed attendees on behalf of the host city and underscored the importance of the Summit’s mission. Their words set the tone for a weekend rich with purpose and community.

A wide array of speakers brought further depth to the Summit. Jess Sims, ESPN college sports reporter and Peloton instructor, spoke about perseverance and purpose beyond athletics. Arielle Chambers, founder of HighlightHER, emphasized athlete empowerment and the importance of visibility for women in sports. Additional panels featured NFL veterans, business leaders, and mental health professionals who offered valuable insights on topics such as entrepreneurship, financial literacy, wellness, and career transitions.

This year’s Summit expanded its focus across four core pillars: academic excellence, mental health and wellness, professional development, and financial literacy. Breakout sessions, networking events, and mentorship activations offered practical tools and meaningful conversations to help student-athletes navigate their futures with confidence and clarity.

The Black Student-Athlete Summit continues to set the standard for how institutions and communities can support student-athletes in reaching their full potential—on the field, in the classroom, and beyond.
