Hurricane Helene impacted Asheville, North Carolina, on September 26–27, 2024. The storm caused catastrophic flooding, primarily due to the overflowing of the Swannanoa River, which devastated infrastructure and homes. The event resulted in unprecedented damage in the region, including to community landmarks like the Municipal Golf Course, and led to significant property losses and tragic fatalities. The storm’s impact left the community grappling with rebuilding efforts and preserving its cherished heritage.

Asheville’s historic Municipal Golf Course is located at 226 Fairway Dr., Asheville, NC 28803 and suffered extensive damage due to flooding caused by Hurricane Helen. Filmmaker Paul Bonesteel has launched a fundraiser to support Friends of Asheville Municipal Golf Course (Friends of Asheville Muni), a 501(c)(3) organization leading efforts to restore the course and ensure its continued operation. Bonesteel’s documentary, titled “Muni” chronicles the history of Black golf at the course.

Designed by Donald Ross in 1927, this iconic course holds historical significance as the home of “The Skyview Open,” the longest-running Black-owned and managed golf tournament. For nearly a century, it has been a cherished community asset for the people of Western North Carolina.

The recent flooding of the Swannanoa River brought devastating losses, including loss of life and significant property damage. The Municipal Golf Course’s front nine, which had undergone recent renovations, was among the casualties. Now, the course faces its most daunting challenge yet. Friends of Asheville Muni, in collaboration with the City of Asheville and Commonwealth Golf, is spearheading a campaign to secure funding for the course’s restoration.

The funds raised will support the design, construction, and overall rebuilding of the course, while also advocating for federal and state funding to address the extensive project. Contributions will help restore a course that has played a vital role in the community and the growth of golf as a sport. Donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Supporters are encouraged to contribute and help bring this historic course back to life. Learn how you can help at https://www.friendsofashevillemuni.com/
