Asheville, North Carolina is set to host the 63rd annual Skyview Golf Tournament, a historic event that holds the distinction of being the longest-running Black-owned golf tournament in the United States. This remarkable legacy has played a crucial role in launching the careers of 29 Black golfers into the PGA, solidifying its place in golf history. The tournament’s impact and rich history have been vividly captured in the documentary “The Muni: Stories from a Public Golf Course,” sponsored by Callaway Golf and directed by Paul Bonesteel. The documentary has garnered widespread acclaim, airing on both PBS and the Golf Channel.

Each year, golfers from across the country and even internationally gather in Asheville to compete on a stage that embodies a legacy unlike any other tournament. The Skyview Golf Tournament has become a symbol of resilience, progress, and unity within the golfing community.

Adding a touch of star power to this year’s event, three prominent figures from the current season of MTV’s Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta will be teeing off together in the amateur division on the tournament’s opening day. Yung Joc, a Platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated rapper known for his chart-topping hits, Lil Scrappy, a Billboard-charting hip-hop artist with multiple platinum albums to his name, and Mendeecees Harris, an esteemed entertainment manager and real estate mogul, will grace the course and bring their own unique flair to the tournament.

On July 11, 2023, at 8 a.m., the Skyview Golf Tournament will commence at the Asheville Municipal Golf Course, affectionately known as “The Muni.” Designed by renowned architect Donald Ross, this course holds significant historical importance as the first golf course in North Carolina to integrate racially. Its commitment to inclusivity and breaking down barriers has made it an iconic venue for golfers of all backgrounds.
