Florida A&M Universityโs athletic director, Angela Suggs, was arrested on June 9 following allegations that she misused a corporate credit card during her tenure as president and CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says Suggs faces two felony chargesโgrand theft and scheme to defraudโas well as four misdemeanor counts related to filing false travel vouchers. Investigators found she charged over $24,000 to the card, including wire transfers, ATM withdrawals, and casino expenses, which she later marked as business meals. Despite repaying some amounts, others were not reimbursed.
Suggs surrendered at the Leon County Detention Facility and was released on a $13,500 bond. The FDLE began its investigation in November 2024 after receiving a referral linked to an audit from the Florida Department of Commerceโs inspector general. According to authorities, Suggs misrepresented personal expenditures on official forms.
Interim FAMU President Timothy Beard issued a statement clarifying the charges are connected to Suggsโ previous role and do not impact her current duties. He noted the university is monitoring the situation. As a result, Suggs has been placed on paid administrative leave, and deputies Travis Glasgow and Brittney Johnson are overseeing athletic operations until further notice.
While in jail records, Suggs has not listed an attorney. She maintained via social media that the allegations are unrelated to her current role and pledged to defend herself legally.
