On April 30, the Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA) successfully concluded another Black Golfers Week, an event designed to spotlight talent along with the need for more inclusion in golf. This year, the event featured an inaugural Celebrity Golf Invitational in Bermuda – a competitive tournament that brought together Hollywood actors and sports legends, including actor Anthony Anderson, and retired pros Byron Chamberlin, Byron Scott and Anthony ‘Spud’ Webb.
During a panel event, Anderson discussed the significant role his mother played in his career and expressed the importance of an event like the BTA’s Black Golfers Week, sharing that growing up in Compton golf did not feel accessible. Other notable attendees who joined in on the fun included Metta World Peace and Eastside Golf founder Olajuwon Ajanaku.
The week also featured a series of social and cultural events that celebrated the beauty and history of Bermuda, including a celebration at Bermuda’s first Black-led golf course, Ocean View Golf Course. This event saw the likes of Hall of Famer Terrell Owens and NFL Champion Santonio Holmes party the night away amongst many of the island’s residents.
Former Super Bowl MVP Richard Dent, fellow champion Willie Gault, and former NFL coach Mike Sherman took home the top prizes, praised the event for its significance, and vowed to return.
