The City of Austin is conducting virtual stakeholder meetings the week of June 21, according to an Urgent Call To Action dispatched by the Muny conservatory at savemuny.com. “The group is asking for public input on zoning for Many! We need all hands on deck to speak up for the permanent preservation of the entire, historic Lions Municipal Golf Course site (4 acres),” says the statement.
The Muny Conservancy was created to end an unpredictable leasing loop and raise dollars for the purchase, renovation and enhancement of the 141-acre site Lions Municipal Golf Course has occupied for nearly a century. We are dedicated to preserving affordable golf, accessibility, the history of Muny and promoting the game for future generations to enjoy.
It was reported in 2017, to keep Lions Municipal Golf Course open into the future, retired American professional golfer Ben Crenshaw looked into the past. It was with that in mind that the former NCAA golf champion who grew up playing there has proposed renovations to the West Austin golf course, changes that would harken back to its 1950 days, as he and others work to preserve what has been recognized as a civil rights landmark.
