On October 5, 2024, the warm breezes of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, set the stage for a memorable achievement in senior golf. Billy Helmes, an 83-year-old golfer from Woodbury, Long Island, New York, emerged victorious at the National Negro Association (NNGA) National Fall Tournament.
With a handicap of 21 and decades of dedication to the sport, Helmes’ Low Net Champion (138) victory was a testament not only to skill, but to perseverance and passion. A proud member of the NNGA since 1975, Billy has long been a familiar and respected presence in the organization. This win adds a meaningful milestone to his nearly 50-year journey with the NNGA.
Before retiring, Billy served as Vice President of Vera Moore Cosmetics, co-owned for over 45-years by him and his lovely wife, a former actress turned entrepreneur, Vera Moore. Billy’s position there reflected his professionalism and leadership in the business world. In retirement, however, he has continued to lead by example on the golf course, staying active and involved in the sport he loves.
When asked about the significance of winning this national tournament, Billy shared, “I feel absolutely great to be with such great friends and still play golf at this age. I’m grateful.” His words capture not only the joy of competition, but also the camaraderie and community that the NNGA fosters among its members.
Billy Helmes’ story is more than a victory on the scorecard. It is a celebration of lifelong friendships, staying active into later years, and the spirit of golf as a unifying force. His achievement in Punta Cana serves as an inspiration—not just to senior golfers, but to anyone who believes in the value of persistence, community, and gratitude.
