New York, NY (December 2003) —Black Americans in Publishinghosted their monthly business mixer with Publisher, Debert Cook who attended and also served as a panelist while joining fellow publishers for an informative session entitled, “Paving the Way-Manning the Helm.”
The program was held at TIME LIFE building on the Avenue of the Americas and provided a mentoring opportuity for college students interested in a career in publishing and for entrepreneurs interested in entering the field.
“I strongly believe that it is very important to train up our next generation of leaders by sharing our professional interests and life experiences with them through formal and informal sessions like this. Many youngsters who are heading off to college have no idea what field of study they plan to pursue. Most times, they just pick something until they decide exactly where their passions lie. In addition, many of them are just plain glad to be going to college, and have become overwhelmed with the process so much so, until they are still in shock of their new status. For me, it’s a delight to talk with them and answer their questions on career alternatives and the field of journalist and publishing,” said Cook.
The three-hour session included participation by twelve local colleges from throughout the city with students ranging from freshman to seniors, seeking information on the actualities of working in publishing.
