Black Bear Makes Off With Golf Bag During Wild Encounter at British Columbia Course (Video)

by AAGD Staff

Golfers at Golden Eagle Golf Club in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, experienced an unforgettable interruption to their round when a curious black bear wandered onto the course and stole a golfer’s bag directly from a golf cart.

The unusual incident, captured on video by fellow golfers, shows the bear calmly approaching the unattended cart before grabbing the golf bag by its strap and dragging it across the fairway. As stunned players watched from a safe distance, one golfer can be heard shouting, “Those are my clubs!” while another jokingly pleads with the animal to put the bag back.

The bear eventually hauled the bag toward a wooded area, where a second bear appeared to be waiting. It remains unclear whether the golfer recovered the clubs or the bag after the encounter.

While the incident may seem amusing, wildlife officials routinely remind golfers and outdoor enthusiasts that bears are often attracted by lingering food odors. Even empty snack wrappers, energy bars, fruit, or beverages stored in golf bags can entice bears to investigate.

Golden Eagle Golf Club is no stranger to wildlife encounters. The course, located in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley, sits in an area where black bears are commonly seen, and recent sightings have included multiple bears roaming the property. Course staff encourage golfers to remain alert, keep food secured, and never approach or attempt to retrieve belongings from a bear.

Videos of the theft quickly spread across social media, where golfers and wildlife enthusiasts alike found humor in the bizarre scene. Online commenters joked that the bear was searching for a snack, looking for a new set of clubs, or simply trying to improve its handicap. Others noted that bears have been known to investigate golf bags because they often contain food or carry lingering food scents.

Although bear sightings are relatively common on golf courses throughout British Columbia, an animal making off with an entire golf bag remains a rare spectacle. The incident serves as a memorable reminder that on courses bordering wilderness, golfers are guests in the bears’ natural habitat—and sometimes the local wildlife decides to play through.
