BALTIMORE – Today, U.S. Congressman Kweisi Mfume (MD-07), Senator Ben Cardin, and Senator Chris Van Hollen (both D-MD) will host a press conference to spotlight the importance of more than $2.25 million in congressionally directed Community Project Funding awarded to the Afro Charities, Inc.
The new federal funding will further the redevelopment of the historic Upton Mansion, which will serve as the permanent home and research center for the AFRO-American Newspapers’ archives, with over 100 years of history. The new federal funding also will enable the digitization of that extensive archive, which includes approximately 3 million photographs ; several thousand letters; back issues of the AFRO’s 13 editions; personal audio recordings of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and much more.
