Dr. Wilson Epinol “WEGO” Gosier, a native of Quitman, Georgia, was a trailblazer in the world of sports officiating and an esteemed educator. His passion for athletics, dedication to his profession, and remarkable achievements left an indelible mark on the field of sports officiating and the academic community. This biographical article explores the early development, sports accomplishments, and significant contributions of Dr. Wilson Gosier throughout his illustrious career.

Early Development: A Promising Start

Born on November 13, 1941, and raised in Quitman, Georgia, Dr. Wilson Gosier demonstrated exceptional academic and athletic abilities from an early age. He excelled as a student, graduating at the age of 16 from the public schools of Brooks County. Gosier’s educational journey continued at Fort Valley State College, where he achieved remarkable success. Initially majoring in Agriculture, his exceptional entrance math exam score and strong recommendations motivated him to switch his major to Education with a concentration in Math. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1963 and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Education in 1971. Additionally, he pursued advanced studies as a Ph.D. Candidate at Georgia State University from 1976 to 1978. Dr. Gosier’s dedication to education was recognized when he was awarded the L.L.D. from Faith College in Birmingham, AL.

Sports Accomplishments: A Trailblazer in Officiating

Dr. Wilson Gosier’s passion for sports and dedication to officiating set him apart as a remarkable figure in the field. He officiated in over 1500 professional, intercollegiate, high school, little league, and intramural basketball and football venues, leaving a lasting impact on the sports community. Notably, he became one of the first group of minority NFL officials after segregation in the American South, making him possibly the only individual in America to officiate professionally for the NCAA NFL, WFL, NBA, and AABA.

His involvement spanned various football leagues, including the NFL, WFL, and SICOA, as well as intercollegiate conferences such as the SEC, SIAC, SUN BELT, METRO, SICOA, BIG EAST, SOUTH ATLANTIC, and BLACK COLLEGE WOMEN’S. Dr. Gosier also officiated in three intercollegiate bowl games: the Citrus Bowl, the Hall of Fame Bowl, and the Coca-Cola Bowl in Tokyo, Japan. His contributions extended to high school sports officiating, particularly within the GHSA.

In addition to his officiating achievements, Dr. Wilson Gosier held leadership positions within the Georgia Association of Approved Basketball Officials, serving as President and Past President. He also made significant contributions as the President and Secretary of the GSA Golf Association. Moreover, he founded and directed the WEGO Golf Classic, an annual tournament that ran for 29 years, with proceeds benefiting Fort Valley State University’s Athletic Scholarship fund.

A Life Committed to Education and Administration

Dr. Gosier’s extensive experience in public school administration, sports officiating, and public relations made him a well-rounded and respected figure in the world of education. Throughout his career, he displayed comprehensive knowledge and understanding of laws, rules, and regulations related to the code of ethics for the education profession. He excelled as an athletics coach in football, basketball, and baseball and demonstrated excellent communication skills as a public speaker. His expertise also encompassed interpreting Fair Dismissal Laws and Teacher Tenure Laws, as well as conducting workshops and seminars on the administration and supervision of education personnel.

Milestones and Conclusions: A Legacy of Excellence

Wilson Gosier’s best golf game was played on the Frog Golf Course in Villa Rica, GA. 

Dr. Wilson Gosier’s dedication and fortitude in his thirty-plus years of officiating left an indelible legacy. Despite the challenges of long flights, road trips, and countless hours of study and preparation, he remained committed to his craft and to supporting the development of young individuals. Dr. Gosier’s tireless efforts and unwavering commitment earned him significant recognition and numerous awards throughout his career, including the Georgia College Basketball Official of the Year in 1984 and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Basketball Officiating in 2005.

After retiring as the Assistant Director of the Professional Practices Commission for the State of Georgia, Dr. Gosier reached the capstone of his career as the Athletic Director at Fort Valley State University, his alma mater. In this role, he spearheaded successful fundraising initiatives, leading to the construction of a $10 million football stadium and significant upgrades to Division II NCAA sports programs and facilities. Dr. Gosier’s dedication to improving sports alumni relations resulted in the establishment of the Fort Valley State University Hall of Fame, where distinguished individuals such as NFL Hall of Fame inductee Rayfield Wright and L.J. “Stan” Lomax were honored.

Dr. Wilson Epinol “WEGO” Gosier’s achievements extended beyond his professional career. He cherished his family and was a proud father to Woody Wilson E. Gosier II, Marsha Nichole Gosier, Katrina Haugabook Hood, and Chevon Fisher Carter. Dr. Gosier’s love for his family and his unwavering commitment to education, athletics, and community service left an enduring impact on the lives he touched.

Dr. Wilson Gosier’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations to pursue their passions, make a difference, and strive for greatness.
