Elevating the Game: The African American Golf EXPO and Forum Positively Impacts The Charlotte Country Club

by James Beatty

Tracy M. Rivers, Director of Human Resources at the Charlotte Country Club (CCC), met Renee Fluker, Founder and President of Midnight Golf Program based in Detroit, Michigan, while at the African American Golf Expo and Forum held last August in Charlotte.NC.  The two of them discussed Midnight Golf and their program “Road Trip For Success” where high school students travel during spring break to different cities for college tours, to play golf, and participate in other networking opportunities.

Renee mentioned that the group would be coming to Charlotte and wanted to discuss the potential of a dinner at the Charlotte Country Club, as this would provide a unique and memorable experience for all.

The Charlotte Country Club was founded in 1910 and is located four miles east of uptown Charlotte, in the historic Plaza-Midwood neighborhood. Charlotte Country Club is known as a Top 20 private club in the United States. The club was also recognized as a Top-50 Platinum Club of the World by the Club Leaders Forum.

As a result, according to Clubhouse Manager, Quinn Moe, 275 students, mentors and guests indeed had a wonderful and memorable experience on March 28 at the Charlotte Country Club. Right On!

Here is the first-hand account as presented by the Country Club:

“CCC recently hosted youth involved in the Midnight Golf Program. This was a historical moment for our Club as we welcomed approximately 260 African American high school seniors who were traveling on Spring Break for their Road Trip for Success College Tour. The purpose of the trip is to allow students, many of whom have never left the region or come from low-to-moderate income or first-generation college families, to see first-hand the possibilities for their future and practice the life skills they’ve learned throughout the program year.”

“The Midnight Golf Program is based in Detroit, and they are dedicated to equipping determined young adults through life skills training, proactive coaching, long-term mentoring, and the discipline of golf in order to succeed in college, in their careers, and beyond. We were honored to be part of their Road Trip for Success College Tour”

But wait there is more

The Club also hosted the CIAA Southern Division Golf Tournament, March 13-14 ,with Johnson C. Smith, a HBCU school as the host college.  One of the Club’s board members brought this opportunity to the Cub and saw it all the way through.

I can attest to the beauty and warmth of the Charlotte Country Club, as my wife, Earlene, and I were treated to a wonderful tour after the EXPO.

Bottom line, the EXPO helps make connections that are life affecting. Please join us at EXPO 2023, Aug. 19 -22 in Louisville, KY.
