In the bustling city of Chicago, amidst its towering skyscrapers and vibrant neighborhoods, resides Erika “Birdie” Shavers, a woman whose name resonates deeply within the local golfing community. Born in the Windy City in 1965, Erika’s journey has been one of transformation and dedication, leading her to become a beacon for women’s golf instruction.

Now 59-years-old, Erika’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in advertising. However, her professional journey took diverse paths before she found her true calling in the world of golf. For 25 years, she navigated the realms of real estate and mortgage consulting, owning her own property management company along the way. But it was the allure of the green fairways that eventually captured her heart and redirected her career trajectory.

Presently, Erika holds the esteemed position of Assistant Director of Program Development with First Tee – Greater Chicago, a role she has embraced for the past eight years. Her transition into the golf industry was not only seamless but also marked by an entrepreneurial spirit as she established herself as an LPGA Teaching Professional Member, imparting her wealth of knowledge and passion for the game to eager learners. Being inspired by her own experiences and driven by a desire to empower others, Erika’s approach to teaching goes beyond mere instruction; it is rooted in fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie among her students.

Erika’s introduction to golf may seem unconventional to some, as it began with virtual swings on the Wii Sports video game. However, it was a catalyst for her deeper immersion into the sport, spurred further by witnessing the prowess of Tiger Woods. Since then, Erika’s love for golf has blossomed, leading her to become a certified LPGA Teaching Professional with a handicap that speaks to her skill and dedication. “Members of the LPGA Teaching Professionals have been incredibly supportive during my journey to become a class A member,” says Erika.

Her home courses, the historic South Shore Golf Course and Harborside International Golf Course, serve as the backdrop for her teachings and embody her commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in the sport. Through initiatives like “Ladies on the Green,” a league she founded in 2012, Erika has been instrumental in introducing more women to the game and creating a supportive community where friendships are forged amidst the swings and putts.
