Ben Hunter, a native of Suffolk, showed an early talent for golf. Upon graduation from Lakeland High School, where he was a 4-time 1st Team All-District and Regional honoree, he received a full golf scholarship to Jackson State University in Jackson, MS. After playing only one semester, Ben came home and took his talents to The Apprentice School, operated by Newport News Shipbuilding, where his talent in golf really blossomed. He not only set records at the school as captain of the team, but he also helped them to garner titles never before dreamed possible. His coach there, B.J. Maben, stated, “I can’t say enough – Ben Hunter is just a tremendous young man! He does well on his job at the shipyard, he does excellent in the classroom, and we all know he’s a tremendous golfer.” Still, Hunter aspires to a career as a professional golfer and is working towards that goal. We are honored to recognize his talent here today. As someone has said, “Move over Tiger… the Hunter is coming!”
