This is an instructional manual covering the fundamentals of the golf swing, the short game, putting, and routine development. The mental game; right brain versus left brain thinking, creating a feeling storehouse, concentration in its purest form, temperament and a historical look at the greats and not so greats of the game–circa 1920 to the Tiger Woods era. Included are the individuals who influenced my development as a golfer, a caddie’s view from inside the ropes, and a look at the world of golf from the inside out.
The 288 page, paperback book is enlightening and particularly interesting is the chapter on Celebrity Sweepstakes which details the involvement of Sammy Davis Jr. and how he increased public exposure for golf tournaments. Davis (1973-1988), a Black American singer, musician, dancer, actor, vaudevillian and comedian, experienced many incidents of racism during his life and contributed much of his earnings to the Civil Rights Movement. Davis lost his left eye in a 1954 car accident and converted to Judaism several years later. One day on the golf course with Jack Benny, he was asked what his handicap was. “Handicap?” he replied, “Talk about a handicap…I’m a one-eyed Negro Jew.” This was to become a signature comment, recounted in his autobiography and in countess articles.
Davis is credited with lending his name to create The Sammy Davis Jr. Greater Hartford Open (1973-84). Officials said that when Davis was involved in the event, he helped increase the pro-am celebrity attendance from 2,000 to 40,000 and the tournament’s purse rose from $200,000 to $700,000.
