How Fore Sistas Golf Is Empowering African American Women

by AAGD Staff

Fore Sistas of Fairview Golf Club Inc., a 501(c)(3) volunteer organization located in Jensen, Florida, is dedicated to expanding the presence and inclusion of talented women in both the sport and business of golf. Through friendship, financial support, and a commitment to equity, the organization supports the growth of African American female youth golfers, providing the resources they need to excel in the sport.

Founded by Phyllis Gillespie, Esq, Jean Laws-Scott, Martha Clark, Debra Williams, and Lynn Solomon, Fore Sistas was born out of a shared passion for golf and a desire to make a meaningful impact. “I started playing with Lynn and Martha just for fun,” Phyllis recalls. “As we played, I noticed women of color on the course and started collecting phone numbers and emails.” This led to the creation of a GroupMe account that now connects over 80 women, ranging from beginners to exceptional players.

In 2023, Fore Sistas shifted its focus to supporting African American female youth golfers, recognizing the financial barriers many face. “Golf’s costs can be a major deterrent for minorities,” Phyllis emphasizes. “We want to help advance the sport and ensure talented young women have the opportunity to succeed.” The tournaments have grown steadily, with over 86 golfers participating in recent years, and proceeds have supported youth golfers like Staci Pla, enabling them to compete and thrive in amateur golf.

The organization’s first tournament, held in 2022 at Martin Downs Golf and Country Club in Palm City, Florida, marked the start of a new chapter. Phyllis explains, “I met Stanley Campbell, the course’s African American owner, in 2021. When I shared my vision of hosting a golf tournament, he was fully on board. He and his staff were incredibly supportive.” With over 84 participants, the event raised funds for local nonprofits focused on children’s mental health and elderly care in African American communities. Her successful efforts in growing the game among women is highly respected and Phyllis was also inducted into the African American Golfers Hall of Fame in 2022.
