Michigan State’s Troy Taylor, II, tops final 2022-2023 APGA Collegiate Ranking
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The top five players in the 2022-2023 APGA Collegiate rankings have been finalized with Troy Taylor, II, of Michigan State University finishing in the top position. The top five players will receive numerous benefits and opportunities as part of this program, now in its third year. Additionally, through finishing as the No. 1 player in the standings, Taylor earns a sponsor’s exemption into the 2023 UNC Health Championship and automatically qualifies for the 2024 season-opening APGA Tour Farmers Insurance® Invitational at Torrey Pines.
The final top five players in the 2022-2023 APGA Tour Collegiate Rankings:
- Troy Taylor II, Michigan State University
- Joel Basakaine, Livingstone College
- Gary Bullard, Army
- Troy Stribling, Florida A&M
- Jason Johnson, Alabama A&M
Taylor has been in the top two of the standings through 2022-2023 season along with Howard University’s Gregory Odom. Odom and his teammate Everett Whiten Jr, who was in third place in rankings published earlier this year, have each been removed from the list as they both plan to return for another year of collegiate golf. The class of 2023 ranking includes Golfstat-ranked college tournaments played in Fall 2021, Spring 2022, Fall 2022 and Spring 2023.
In addition to Taylor receiving exemptions into the 2023 UNC Health Championship and the 2024 APGA Tour Farmers Insurance Invitational, the top five players in the final 2022-2023 APGA Collegiate Ranking will receive:
- Scholarship access to APGA TOUR events through the remainder of the 2023 APGA Tour season
- Scholarship access into the Korn Ferry Qualifying School for the 2024 season
- Membership to the APGA Tour through May of 2024
“After having the opportunity to play in the APGA Tour Billy Horschel Invitational presented by Cisco the last two years, I have so much respect for the players on the APGA Tour, the mission, vision and the level of competition on the Tour as a whole,” Taylor said. “Since playing in those events, it’s been a goal of mine to finish the season No. 1 in the APGA Tour Collegiate Rankings. With the benefits and player development tools that the APGA Tour provides, the exemption to play in my first Korn Ferry Tour event and a spot in the Farmers Insurance Invitational at Torrey Pines, I’m excited to take the next step in my golf career and I’m blessed to have the opportunities the APGA Tour provides.”
In his two starts on the APGA Tour at TPC Sawgrass, Taylor II finished 2nd to Willie Mack in 2021 and T6 in 2022. Son of former Ohio State University basketball star, Troy Taylor, Taylor II was introduced to golf at a young age. Troy’s father did not want him to become burned out by basketball as a young athlete, so Taylor II quickly picked up the game of golf and never looked back. Taylor plans to remain an amateur for the time being as he attempts to qualify for the U.S. Amateur in August 2023.
Taylor II is a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, Academic All-Big Ten and a Golf Coaches Association of America All-American Scholar for the 2021-2022 season. Most notably in his past two seasons at Michigan State, he won his first collegiate event, posted two top 10 finishes and eight among the top 25. Additionally, Taylor was among the 10 collegiate golfers named to the inaugural Black College Golf Coaches Association (BCGCA) All-American team in 2022. Recently, he was the Michigan State recipient for the 2023 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
“We are thrilled to welcome another class from the APGA Tour Collegiate Rankings to the APGA Tour,” said Ken Bentley, CEO of the APGA Tour. “This program has become a vital part of the pipeline being built and maintained to help black golfers on their path from junior golf, through college and into the professional game. In the past, many young golfers coming from college have struggled to find playing opportunities or necessary resources to improve as players. We are proud to be able to provide the best minority college golfers with a home tour where they can face strong competition, play high-level golf courses, and receive assistance to grow as players and men.”
This is the third year of the APGA Tour Collegiate Rankings. Top players from the past two classes have enjoyed success through their early APGA Tour careers and have all utilized the tools and access to continue to improve on and off the course. Andrew Walker, who was a teammate of Taylor’s at Michigan State, won the APGA Tour Cisco Invitational at Baltusrol in 2022. Walker finished second in the inaugural APGA Tour Collegiate Rankings. Below is a full list of past qualifiers from the collegiate rankings:

The APGA Collegiate Ranking was announced in October 2020 through a partnership between the PGA TOUR and the APGA Tour. Eligible players are Black golfers from NCAA Division I or II programs – including HBCUs – who exhaust a minimum of four years of college eligibility. The APGA Collegiate Ranking is based on players’ Golfstat adjusted scoring average, designed to evaluate the top players positioned to qualify for APGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament access.
Additionally, in March the PGA TOUR formally announced its Pathway to Progression player development program, a comprehensive effort to achieve greater diversity in golf through an increased focus on developing talent from diverse and historically underrepresented groups. Pathway to Progression, in alignment with the APGA Tour partnership and the Collegiate Ranking program, will provide a path for talented junior and collegiate golfers from diverse backgrounds to continue their development in professional golf.

International golf study to research health and wellbeing impacts on golfers with disabilities
Golfers with disabilities are being invited to take part in a new academic study aimed at gathering insights into the sport’s effect on quality of life and life satisfaction.
Abertay University in Dundee, Scotland has partnered with EDGA to launch the international survey for golfers with a disability, which will be distributed to golfing and disability support organizations across the globe.
EDGA is the leading association for golfers with a disability, providing advice, guidance, and standards to major golfing bodies including The IGF, The R&A, the European Tour Group, and the EGA. Its membership of 39 national federations has grown beyond those in Europe to include: Golf Australia, New Zealand Golf, The Indian Golf Union, The Argentina Golf Association, Golf South Africa, The Israeli Golf Association, The Lebanese Golf Federation, and Golf Canada.
The survey is open to anyone so they just click on the link and complete it.

The research project, which will be led by Abertay’s Division of Sport and Exercise Sciences, will undertake an in-depth analysis into the lives of people who engage in golf for the disabled (G4D).
In addition to recording data on physical activity levels, quality of life, life satisfaction, and general health, the study will gather information on social and economic factors, as well as measures of anxiety and depression.
The study was launched at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland on Tuesday 23 May and is the latest project to be undertaken at the Carnoustie Golf Links Research Hub, which was developed in partnership with Abertay University.
Carnoustie Golf Links already foster close ties with the G4D movement through Scottish Disability Sport and Dundee Dragons Wheelchair Sports Club, offering specialized Golfers with Disabilities coaching sessions led by PGA Professionals.
Ashley Williams of Abertay University’s Division of Sport and Exercise Sciences said: “The G4D movement is growing across the world, but we still need to better understand the impact that taking part in the sport can have on participants. We are delighted to be partnering with EDGA on this important work to develop a more in-depth understanding of the ways in which golfers with disabilities engage with the sport and the potential benefits which can be derived from that engagement. Abertay’s goal is to produce research that can have an impact in the real world, and we hope that the data gained from the survey can be used by disability sports organizations worldwide.”
Dr Tony Bennett, President of EDGA said: “The evidence we have to date clearly points to golf being good for the health and wellbeing of golfers around the world. We also know that individuals with disabilities are generally less active than their non-disabled counterparts but a significant number want more activity and sport in their lives. The nature of golf allows people with a wide range of disabilities to participate in the game due to using their own ball, which is stationary. EDGA is delighted to partner with Abertay University to gain further insights on to the effects of golf on quality of life and life satisfaction.”
Michael Wells, Chief Executive of Carnoustie Golf Links said: “Carnoustie Golf Links have always been an accessible golfing venue. From as far back as the 17th Century, when, most often women were not even allowed onto golf courses, Carnoustie was doing things differently, encouraging a thriving female golfing community. This inclusive and progressive attitude continues to this day, with an emphasis on making the game of golf, with all its health and well-being benefits, available to anyone who wants to get involved.
“We’ve always been very keen to break down real and perceived barriers into the game, and by working with Abertay University, we’ve been able to conduct important and valuable studies which have helped us to make our golf development programs even more accessible. This new study will further our knowledge and understanding of how golf can benefit golfers with disabilities.”
Joe Muir, parent of a young golfer who attends classes at Carnoustie said: “The golf tuition is the highlight of our son’s week. He has learned so much and the golf professionals and fellow golfers treat him as an equal. We appreciate how the golf professionals understand and adapt to his difficulties – we are all very grateful for the boost to his confidence that being part of the group gives him.”

HBCU Golfers Make their Mark at Aramco Team Series Florida Tournament
Two young golfers, Makenna Rodriguez and Leiahnni Smith, had the opportunity to play in the Pro-Am at the Aramco Team Series, Ladies European Tournament (LET), Florida event presented by Aramco. They represented Women of Color Golf (WOCG) and the mentoring program Girls on the Green Tee (GOTGT). The program aims to introduce young girls to golf and promote leadership development, self-esteem, and healthy habits. The golfers expressed their gratitude for the experience and the chance to learn from Johanna and be part of such a wonderful tournament.
Makenna and Leiahnni had the privilege of playing alongside Swedish LET professional Johanna Gustavsson, who achieved an impressive third place in the 2022 Race to Costa del Sol and was a winning team captain last year.
Joined by Vasti Amaro, an Advisory Board Member for Women of Color Golf (WOCG), the trio proudly represented both WOCG and their mentoring program, Girls on the Green Tee (GOTGT). GOTGT is specifically designed to introduce girls aged 10-17 to the game of golf while fostering leadership development, self-esteem, and instilling values such as respect, honesty, and responsibility.
Clemmie Perry, Founder & Executive Director of WOCG and GOTGT, said: “It was such a pleasure to have our minority students play in the LET Pro-Am at the Aramco Team Series – Florida and it was an experience of a lifetime to bring them here and we want to thank you for the opportunity.
Leiahnni, a College Women of Color Golf Ambassador from Edward Waters University, described the experience as amazing and unique, gaining valuable insights from Johanna while enjoying her caddie’s company. She said: “Yesterday was an amazing experience. For me to be able to see what a golf tournament is like on the other side of the spectator rope was a very unique experience.
“Johanna was very fun to play with, she gave us lots of tips and advice. I also enjoyed her caddie; he was really nice and fun. Overall, this was an experience of a lifetime and I’m very blessed to have this experience and am looking forward to the rest of the week.”
Makenna, equally grateful, praised Women of Color Golf for granting her the opportunity to play with LET professional Johanna, highlighting the enlightening conversations about the game, mindset, and the experiences of being an athlete and a woman in the field. “I am eternally grateful for the opportunity that Women of Color Golf gave me to be able to play with a professional LET player. Especially one as embracing and wonderful as Johanna, she truly enlightened me about the game, her state of mind and moving forward as an athlete and a woman in this field,” said Makenna.
In an exciting addition, Makenna’s sister Morgan also joined the Pro-Am day and had the privilege of walking alongside and experiencing the round with Johanna. Morgan described the experience as surreal, sharing the same head game and golf game as the pros. She expressed gratitude for the fun and inspiring time, acknowledging Johanna’s talent and the opportunity to receive tips and share her own goals and aspirations.
Overall, this memorable experience allowed the young golfers to witness the professional golfing world up close, learn valuable lessons, and connect with an accomplished LET player. They expressed their appreciation for the opportunity, emphasizing how blessed and fortunate they felt to be part of such an extraordinary event.

This fine-aged bourbon will be released in the U.S. in May, marking the entrepreneur’s debut into the spirits industry
BOONE COUNTY, KY – May 23, 2023 – Four-time NBA Champion and two-time MVP Stephen Curry is entering the spirits industry with the upcoming launch of Gentleman’s Cut Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Years in the making, this highly anticipated, fine-aged bourbon will be released worldwide in May at The Boone County Distilling Co. following the inaugural bottling.
“Celebrations take on many different forms, from intimate gatherings to major milestones, and at the center of each memorable moment is a spirit rooted in history and tradition,” said Stephen Curry. “I’m proud to have helped carefully craft a new signature Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Gentleman’s Cut. This rich, complex and bold bourbon is the perfect offering to commemorate life’s great occasions, and will be part of a raised-glass toasting moment in the lives of my fans, friends and family.”
The name Gentleman’s Cut speaks to the art of crafting a truly fine spirit, as well as to Curry’s skillful movement on and off the court. Motivated by his passion for premium bourbon, Curry was intimately involved in every step of the process – from the manufacturing, blending and aging to the packaging and marketing efforts. At the heart of the spirit’s label is a personal message from him.
Gentleman’s Cut is distilled in 500-gallon copper pot stills, giving the whiskey a full-bodied palate and complex aromatic profile. The whiskey is then aged 5-7 years in charred new white oak barrels resulting in tasting notes of cinnamon, seared caramel and sweet toasted chestnut.
The bourbon is distilled, aged and bottled by Game Changer Distillery in Boone County, KY. Curry’s SC30 Inc. partnered with John Schwartz (owner of highly acclaimed Amuse Bouche Winery in Napa Valley) to form a joint venture with Boone County Distilling Co., celebrating the craft spirit pioneer of the region. Located on the Kentucky Craft Bourbon Trail, Boone County Distilling – born in 1833 – resurrected the time-tested culture, pride and determination of the craft, and continues a tradition of quality, grain-to-glass spirits methods.
“In close collaboration with Stephen, we produced a high-quality aged bourbon offered at a great value that will resonate with bourbon connoisseurs and help grow the craft bourbon category to our global audience,” said Schwartz.
Gentleman’s Cut has signed a national distribution agreement with Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits. Internationally, China Duty Free Group, which operates more than 200 stores in 70 cities, will be among a select group of importers establishing the brand overseas.
The suggested retail price for Gentleman’s Cut is $79.99 per 750ml.

ABOUT GENTLEMAN’S CUT
SC30 Inc. in partnership with John Schwartz formed Game Changer, LLC., a joint venture with Boone County Distilling Company in Northern Kentucky, to create Gentleman’s Cut. This Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey from Stephen Curry is aged 5-7 years. The bourbon’s complex mashbill of 75% Corn, 21% Rye and 4% Malted Barley delivers tasting notes of honey, fresh vanilla bean, and rich caramel on the palate. Our inaugural bottling is polished and smooth at 90 proof. We distill our whiskey the traditional way, in a 500-gallon Copper Pot still.
ABOUT STEPHEN CURRY
Stephen Curry’s on and off court legacy is underscored by transformation and innovation. His 14-year career in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors is marked by many firsts. He was the first person to be named Most Valuable Player by unanimous vote in NBA history, the first player to hit 100 3-pointers in the NBA Finals, one of a select few to win MVP awards two years in a row, remains the all-time leading scorer in Golden State Warriors history and recently surpassed former record-holder Ray Allen for most 3-pointers made in NBA history. He holds nine NBA all-star selections and four NBA Championships. Beyond the game of basketball, Stephen is an emerging figure in the Bay Area with a number of innovative and progressive consumer, entertainment and non-profit endeavors.

Travel Advisory Issued by NAACP: Black People Advised to Avoid Traveling to Florida
The NAACP has issued a travel advisory urging Black people to avoid visiting Florida, citing Governor Ron DeSantis’ efforts to erase African American history and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in schools. According to CNN, the historic advocacy group released a statement expressing concern over Florida’s hostile stance towards African Americans, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals. The NAACP emphasized that the state devalues and marginalizes the contributions and challenges faced by these communities.
The travel advisory has been in development for months, with the Hillsborough County Chapter of the NAACP collaborating with the national office. NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson denounced DeSantis’ actions, stating that the failure to teach an accurate representation of the struggles and inequalities faced by Black Americans is a disservice to students and a neglect of duty.
Governor DeSantis, a controversial Republican politician, has prioritized social issues since taking office. Last year, he signed the “Stop WOKE Act,” which imposes restrictions on discussions about race and gender in classrooms. The state’s curriculum has faced significant changes under his administration, with areas of concern recommended for removal, including Black Queer Studies, Movement for Black Lives, Black Feminist Literary Thought, The Reparations Movement, and Black Struggle in the 21st Century. Additionally, books by influential Black authors such as Bell Hooks and Angela Davis have been banned.
This travel advisory is not the first issued by the NAACP in relation to African Americans. In 2017, a similar advisory was issued against the state of Missouri due to concerns over race, gender, and color-based crimes.
The NAACP’s travel advisory serves as a call to awareness, cautioning individuals about the treatment of African Americans and other marginalized communities in Florida.
