Bart Bryant, a three-time PGA Tour winner who bested Tiger Woods down the stretch to win two of them, died in a car accident on Tuesday, according to the PGA Tour.
Information was sketchy but the accident occurred in Florida as Bryant and his wife Donna were driving from Atlanta to their home in Winter Garden.
Bryant, who along with his brother Brad were two of 12 brother combinations to win on the Tour, won all three of his titles after the age of 40, laboring on mini-tours for nearly two years and overcoming injuries and multiple trips through the Tour’s national qualifying process.
His first Tour victory was in the 2004 Texas Open at the age of 41, where he shot a third-round 60 at the La Canterra Country Club in San Antonio on his way to winning in his 187th PGA Tour start.
He won twice in 2005, and both were huge: he captured The Memorial (being played this week in Dublin, Ohio) by one shot over Fred Couples and four over Tiger Woods, then won the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake by six over Woods, with a course-record 62 in the first round.
It was the largest margin Woods has ever lost by when finishing second. Woods returned the favor three years later when he made a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole of the Arnold Palmer Invitational to beat Bryant by one shot.
Bryant and his brother were born in Texas but grew up in New Mexico, where they were junior golf and mini-tour legends. Brad Bryant was a two-time All-American at New Mexico State but then struggled, having to go to the Tour’s qualifying tournament six times and battling shoulder and elbow injuries.
He won twice on the PGA Tour Champions, the last in 2018 at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open. Bryant posted five top-25 PGA Tour Champions finishes in 2019 and had one top-20 among four 2020 starts. He has not played a full schedule since.
Bryant is survived by his brother, his wife, daughters Kristen and Michelle and his stepchildren.
“The PGA TOUR is saddened by the tragic passing of Bart Bryant and our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time,” said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan in a statement. “The Bryants have been a part of the PGA TOUR family for over four decades and we are grateful for the impact and legacy he made on our organization and countless communities. Bart will be dearly missed.”

Mark Lowry’s work and success with instituting a player development system were well documented in the mid-90s when, in 1995, he was selected to create and launch the Chicago Public School’s Elementary school golf training program to feed a struggling high school team program. By 1998, the program began to receive national acclaim as over forty elementary schools were offering after school golf instruction while simultaneously,
Mark expanded the high school golf program with growth from nine of the CPS system’s seventy-three high schools to over thirty who competed and advanced from city competition to producing qualifiers at the regional and state level. In 1998, Lowry joined the new industry initiative, The First Tee, where for 20 years he held positions in senior leadership. Lowry played a key role in developing the strategies that would guide the development and operations of the organization from a concept to a nationally recognized youth golf development organization.
As Vice President of Network Management, Mark oversaw the development and support of the organization’s eight national regions and over 150 network chapters. These experiences gave rise to the National Golf Player Development Foundation (NGPDF).
Lowry says, “The time has come to support the efforts of the players, parents, organizations and institutions that are working to deepen the competitive player pool of players of color. The NGPDF, through its efforts to secure individual, corporate and industry funding resources and developmental partnerships, will identify deserving young players of color and provide support to individuals, programs and institutions that equally share the goal to increase the competitive player pool representing minority communities.”

Vegas Golf “On The Course”game is the number one selling golf fame in the world. The on-the-course golf gambling game was created by a father and son who had a passion for playing poker and playing golf! As a very young man Wayne Sr., taught his son, Wayne Jr., to play craps, poker and golf! (Today, they are not sure which one came first). As Wayne Jr. got older he would accompany his dad to Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe for golf, gambling and fun. “I clearly remember on one of the trips to Vegas, playing a round of golf and we were using some of the casino chips from the night before to make bets,” says Wayne Jr. “On the back 9 my father said he has a great idea for a golf product.” and the rest is history.
The two formalized what they were doing by placing negative and positive tasks on real poker chips and sold it as a game! The brillant game idea was given the name, “On The Course” because it rewards you for the positive things you accomplish and punishes you for the hazards.” The two then scribbled down some characters on paper creating the game rules.
The Original version at the time only contained 7 chips (Positive: Birdie, 1-Putt, Negatives: Trees, Sand, Water, 3-Putt and 8-Ball). “Right away I went to work on creating the funny characters that represented the positive and negative shots. The game was first introduced as golf tee prizes in which they would and still do place sponsors logo on the back of each chip for various golf promotions,” said Wayne Jr.
Since that time Vegas Golf has grown considerably and it is the #1 selling “On The Course” golf game in the world. “My father passed away years ago but I know he is happy to see how Vegas Golf has evolved.” Vegas Golf The Game now offers 5 different Editions and is constantly introducing new playing chips. Each edition has different combination of chips.
The newest version of the game is the ALL-IN edition which incorporates 26 different chips. The most popular new chips include the Beer, Grave Digger and Par Tee chips. Beer chip rule… Every Pr 3 whoever has the worst tee shot gets the beer chip. If it is in your pocket when the beer cart comes by you are buying! Grave Digger chip: takes you more than 1 shot to get out of a bunker. Par Tee chip is given to the last person that pars a hole.
Also new this year is the Highest and Lowest score chip along with several magnetic chip strips that hold the authentic poker chips in place. These easily attach to your golf bag with a large carabiner for easy access. Only one game is needed per foursome. 1 Game… Lots of Laughs with a must-see demo.
The Vegas Golf Games start at only $19.95 and is sold in most of the large golf retailers in the USA and in 15 countries worldwide with Free Shipping, Gift cards and wholesale is available. Find more information at www.vegasgolfthegame.com

Mr. James Black turned 80 years old on May 28, 2022, and with every year of celebration, his legendary status is only shining brighter. Black was excellent at his sport and good enough to win tournaments on the United Golf Association (UGA) tour, the primary tour for Black players for decades. That’s where he met Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson, who played in some UGA events, and he took his game on the road, wherever it led him.
The former exceptionally skilled pro golfer had 11 career starts on the PGA Tour and won many times on the UGA Tour. A number of people familiar with golf would probably say that Tiger Woods was the first Black professional golfer to score a 67 in the first round of his first tournament. Woods did that in the Greater Milwaukee Open in 1997. Black, who was a self-taught caddy and child prodigy, accomplished that feat at the age of 21 at the L.A. Open back in 1964. That week, Black would finish in the top 10, one of two top-10 finishes in five PGA Tour starts that year, earning $2,425 in 1964 according to tour records—proving his ability to play at the highest level of the game, an opportunity many Black players were denied.
Black is also the only African-American golfer to win the Negro Junior, Amateur and Professional titles in UGA events.
He enjoyed his special 80th birthday surrounded by Terrell Osbourne and several other admiring guys at the Charlie Sifford Golf course in Charlotte NC. Avid golfer Terrell Osbourne arranged for the group to celebrate with Mr. Black for a birthday to remember. “Everything went well and PGA TourJames Black Talks About the Intertwining of Life & Golf was in good spirits,” said Terrell.
Happy birthday to the octogenarian Mr. James Black.
African American Golf History Celebration Honors Life and Legacy of Legends

Speakers including former Augusta National Golf Club caddie Jariah Beard gave tributes to the life and legacy of a selected list of honorees. Cynthia Osborne, widow of Jerry “Hobo” Osborne, spoke about her late husband as a caring family man, and someone who was not only a great caddie but a man who was dedicated to helping minority youth succeed in the sport of golf.
Helene Carter from Paine College (Augusta, Georgia) spoke on behalf of the Paine College President Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones. “Please continue to tell our story. What you are doing is needed,” said Carter after the event.
Celebrity guest former WBA heavyweight champion James “Bonecrusher” Smith spoke about his close friendship with Lee Elder, the first African American to receive an invitation to The Masters and to compete in The Masters.
Preserve The Legacy Committee Members Ramona Harriet, Arthur Johnson, David Rachels, and Rosevelt Walden thank all who attended the event and give special thanks to Stanley Campbell, facility event host; James “Bonecrusher” Smith for donating his time to attend; Grammy nominee soprano saxophonist Eirinn Abu, for providing musical entertainment; MRA Mobile Experiential for donation of the historical banners of legends; Jerome Brown for his donation; and in-kind supporters Club Pro Manufacturing USA for the custom Lee Elder golf car cover; Paine College for Lee Elder banner, Leroy Stanley Jr., Brenda Barton, Artis Gilmore, and African American Golfer’s Digest.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME | GREENWOOD GOLF
In March 2022, we went on a golf trip to Jacksonville, Florida.
The plan was to get the best of both worlds; for two days we were going to play a round of golf in the morning and then visit the PGA’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in the afternoon. It seemed like the perfect trip. Fortunately for me, it didn’t turn out quite like we planned.
You may or may not recall but the weather in Jacksonville, Florida during that weekend was terrible. It was exceptionally cold, very windy and there was lots of rain. For a trip that was centered around being outside, the trip was essentially ruined.
However, instead of sitting around sulking about what we couldn’t do, the three of us forged ahead. Each day, we found something to do to fill our time. Between trying local new restaurants and exploring the local businesses, we managed to make it through most of the rained-out weekend. And we the golfing gods granted us just a few hours of reprieve we made our way to Jacksonville Beach Golf Club to play a round of golf. That’s when and where this picture was taken.
By the end of the round, we were soaking wet. As we were standing in the clubhouse drying off, laughing at the moments from the round I couldn’t help but appreciate the guys that I was with. There were a lot of things that we could have complained about over the weekend. I’m sure there were other things that we could have been doing. Despite all of those things, the three of us were in Jacksonville, Florida playing golf in the rain. That was a moment that I will never forget. Not to mention the time, one of the guys almost fell into the water trying to swing at a ball in the hazard…haha…
I share this story with you because the golf trip to Jacksonville reminded me of something important. Despite all of the things that did not go our way, we found other things that we could enjoy. For one, the trip allowed me the opportunity to spend time with two men whom I admire. I would even say look up to. Second, the guys helped me to realize that adversity will happen in life. There is no way to prevent it. The challenge for me as a man, as a husband, and as a father is to make the best of any situation, especially those that don’t go as planned.
This picture from our golf trip to Jacksonville represents what Greenwood GOLF is all about. Passionate golfers who will play in the rain to make the best of any situation.
Tell me about your golf trip that didn’t go as planned.

Straight-forwardly priced at $40/dozen.

When I decided to drive 800 miles round trip from Omaha to Tulsa to report on the 104th PGA Championship, held May 19–22 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, I was very conscious of the city’s history with the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, an event that all people, especially people of color, will never forget.
As I write this article, it has been 100 years and 358 days since that tragedy. So in my mind, I not only want to report on the golf tournament but also pay homage and respect to the people and families of this most ugly page in US history in which 35 square blocks were destroyed, 300 Black people were killed,10,000 were displaced and no white person was ever arrested or charged.

Of course, I am eager to chronicle the on course accomplishments of Cameron Champ, Harold Varner III, Wyatt Worthington II, and Tiger Woods but as a Black journalist, I cannot and should not forget or ignore the off-course activities regarding Greenwood also known as Black Wall Street.
This week, on Wednesday, May 18, the three remaining victims/survivors of Greenwood each over 100 years of age were given a lump sum $1 Million dollars by the New York-based foundation, Business for Good. The foundation’s vision and values are that Business can shatter barriers, it can give access, it can be an equalizer. Inequity is real and persistent but not inevitable. Ed Mitzen, co-founder of the foundation with his wife Lisa, presented the check. He stated, “We felt like it shouldn’t be this hard to get some sense of relief for what they went through. We just want to help.”
In 2001, the Tulsa Race Riot Commission, which was tasked by the state of Oklahoma with investigating the massacre, recommended that officials conduct excavations to search for mass graves of massacre victims. The commission also recommended that the state make “direct payments to riot survivors and descendants.” But no state or city reparations have been paid to survivors or descendants.
What was golf doing in 1921?
Well In 1921, British golfer Jim Barnes won the US Open, President Warren Harding even attended the final day of the event and presented Barnes with the championship medal.
Barnes also won $500 for his win. The renowned Bobby Jones was an amateur and finished 5th with a 23-over par performance in that same tournament.
Citing an article written by James D. Robenalt in the Washington Post on June 21,2020 “President Warren G. Harding spent the weekend worrying over how to respond to the massacre. Finally, he decided to accept a commencement invitation from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, the nation’s first degree-granting historically Black institution. He would use that moment in 1921 to seek healing and harmony — and several months later in Alabama, he would go much further with daring remarks about equality. That was how a Republican president addressed racially fraught events nearly a century ago.”
Robenalt continued to write in that same article
“Despite the demagogues, the idea of our oneness as Americans has risen superior to every appeal to mere class and group,” Harding declared. “And so, I wish it might be in this matter of our national problem of races.”
Few people could have missed the symbolism of Harding’s June 6 visit to Lincoln, Pa., near the small town of Oxford, about five miles north of the Maryland border. The university had been founded as the Ashmun Institute in 1854 but changed its name after the Civil War in tribute to the assassinated president. Early on, it was known as “the Black Princeton.”
Harding wanted to acknowledge the searing anguish of Tulsa not just for African Americans there but also across the nation.
Formed in 2017, the then-Tulsa Race Riot Centennial Commission decided to refer to the event as a massacre “based on community input.” The rationale, members said, was “to shed the name given by the offenders and reclaim the narrative of our history.”
Support for the name change also came from long-held dissatisfaction that black residents victimized during the massacre were unable to recoup restitution because insurance claims didn’t cover calamities attributed to riots.
You see for me, golf and the history of African Americans in this nation are intertwined. We should all pause and learn from the past whether 100 years ago, or the last hole.

Clearly, there are lessons to be learned on and off the course and we have to keep a scorecard on each so we can gauge our progress. While not totally satisfied with the progress made to date in either front, I am encouraged more now than ever before. I do acknowledge that much has been done as conscious and intentional efforts are being taken by several people and pray that more will continue to be done.
We learn from Life; we learn from Golf or at least we should.
As I complete this article Tiger has withdrawn from the tournament. Cameron Champ and Wyatt Worthington II missed the cut. Harold Varner III finishes T-48. Mito Pereira was leading the tournament until his ball found the creek on 18, he also double-bogeyed 18 missing a chance for a 3-way playoff. Justin Thomas won the championship in a 3-hole cumulative score playoff over Will Zalatoris.
Many lessons can be taken from Tulsa this week.
Oh, well I suppose it is a time of reflection for everybody.
