Ralph Stokes will be honored with one of sports journalism’s most distinguished recognitions when he receives the Sam Lacy Pioneer Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Association of Black Journalists’ annual convention on August 14 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Presented by the NABJ Sports Task Force, the Sam Lacy Pioneer Lifetime Achievement Award is the organization’s highest honor, recognizing individuals whose careers have made a lasting impact on sports and society. Stokes is being celebrated for a remarkable journey that has spanned athletics, business leadership, and youth development, leaving an enduring mark on the game of golf and beyond.

The award is named for legendary sports columnist Sam Lacy, whose groundbreaking career stretched across nine decades. Lacy played a pivotal role in advocating for the integration of Major League Baseball and was instrumental in supporting Jackie Robinson as he broke the sport’s color barrier. His legacy remains a powerful symbol of excellence, advocacy, and change.

Founded in 1975 by 44 journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists has grown into the nation’s largest organization for journalists of color. This year, approximately 5,000 members—including reporters, editors, photographers, and digital journalists—will gather in Atlanta from August 10-16 for a week of workshops, networking opportunities, a career fair, and special events.

Within the organization, the NABJ Sports Task Force has served since 1987 as a vital network for print, broadcast, and multimedia sports journalists. Each year, its Pioneer Awards dinner reception and ceremony draws about 150 attendees, creating an intimate yet prestigious setting to celebrate trailblazers in sports and media. Honorees traditionally share the occasion with family, friends, and professional colleagues.

Stokes’ selection reflects a career defined by leadership, innovation, and service. A standout collegiate athlete who went on to become a highly respected executive in the golf industry, he has consistently worked to expand access and opportunity within the sport. His influence has extended far beyond the fairways, particularly through his dedication to mentoring and empowering the next generation.

One of his most notable contributions has been his involvement with programs such as the First Tee Leadership Academy, which helps young people build character, confidence, and leadership skills through golf. By creating pathways for youth to succeed both on and off the course, Stokes has helped shape futures while reinforcing the game’s potential as a vehicle for personal growth and social impact.

Receiving the Sam Lacy Pioneer Lifetime Achievement Award places Stokes among an elite group of leaders whose work has transcended their professions. His career stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, vision, and a commitment to opening doors for others.

As the NABJ convenes in Atlanta this August, Stokes’ recognition will serve not only as a celebration of his accomplishments, but also as an acknowledgment of his profound influence on golf, journalism, and youth development. His legacy continues to inspire future generations to pursue excellence while creating meaningful change in their communities.
