It’s The Happy Island of Aruba for Pat and Vinette

by Debert Cook July 20, 2021

Vinette Tummings (let) and Patricia Fraser (right) experience a downtown trolly ride.

July 21, 2021 | BY AAGD STAFF

It was a vacation to remember in Aruba where the multi-cultural residents are known for their friendliness and welcoming ways, earning the island its nickname, “The Happy Island.” This sun-drenched destination was a perfect getaway for travelers Pat Fraser an Vinette Tummings. The best friends hopped a Delta flight to the tropical paradise, June 7-12, for 6 days/5 nights of fun and relaxation.

Their originally planned trip for 2021 had been for Cuba, but the ever-changing travel conditions surrounding COVID-19 forced a switch in plans, so they opted for Aruba instead.

The Hotel Riu Palace Antillas, All-Inclusive, Adult Only, 5-Star resort located on Palm Beach, Aruba.

The Hotel Riu Palace Antillas would be their dwelling place for the next several days. The All-Inclusive, Adult Only, 5-Star resort is located on the shores of Palm Beach. RUI is the perfect place to relax, with a spa and hair salon offering a wide variety of treatments, water sports such as windsurfing, snorkeling and kayaking, a free gym, and even a diving test in the swimming pool.

A golf course, bicycle rental and the possibility of interesting hiking routes are all available in the surrounding area. An onsite buffet restaurant and three thematic restaurants offer a wide array of world flavors where guests can enjoy the colorful Caribbean cuisine at lunch and dinner with magnificent ocean views. At night, RIU’s entertainment program pops with lively shows, a dance floor to kick up your heels, or try your luck at the casino.

Patricia enjoying the view from her balcony at the All-Inclusive, Adult Only, 5-Star Hotel Riu Palace Antillas in Aruba.

Enjoying Aruba was Patricia, a retired social worker (MSW/LCSW) who served with the New York City Department of Education for 26 years and during that time, also started her own private practice as a Psychotherapist in Long Island and Brooklyn Heights 15 years ago. She has also been on the Executive Board of The DREAM Foundation for the past five years, and was one of 33 passengers on the exciting Cape Town, South Africa annual cultural trip with African American Golfer’s Digest in October 2019.

Vinette graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School and is an Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialist (OB/GYN) with over 25 years of medical experience. “The best thing abut being in Aruba was just being able to relax on the beach. The people were very friendly and not always trying to sell you something either,” says Vinette. “Aruba was nice place an I felt very safe there.”

Shopping for souvenirs in ‘Little Switzerland’

The two friends are both originally from Jamaica, West Indies, and currently reside in Brooklyn, NY. Having met seven years ago on a group trip to Mexico, they have traveled many times together exploring the Dominican Republic, Barbados for Crop Over Festival, cruising to Bermuda, and DisneyWorld.

Vinette shares a seat with a new friend.

The Aruba trip was a first for both ladies and their busy itinerary reflected maximized enjoyment! The splendor of the small Caribbean island ‑which is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands‑ offered much to see and do.

Patricia making the most of Aruba nightlife.

Eager to experience as much as possible the two adventurers took in numerous sightseeing activities including an island tour, souvenir shopping in ‘Little Switzerland,’ a downtown trolly ride, visit to the Aruba Historical Museum, and to St. Nicholas (Chocolate City) where most of the Africans/Blacks live.

In consideration of the 24-hour availability of an abundance of delicious foods and drinks the women participated in beach Zumba and aerobics.

“Vinette and I had a wonderful time there,” says Patricia, and the two lovely ladies are looking forward to their next adventure.

PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe today jointly announced the cancellation of this year’s Junior Ryder Cup

by Debert Cook July 20, 2021
written by Debert Cook

OINT STATEMENT FROM
THE PGA OF AMERICA AND RYDER CUP EUROPE

July 20, 2021

The PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe today jointly announced the cancellation of this year’s Junior Ryder Cup due to ongoing travel issues for the European Junior Ryder Cup party. The match was scheduled to take place at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, from September 20-21.

We are deeply disappointed for the talented young athletes on both sides of the Atlantic who were working hard to earn a place in this wonderful match. First played in 1997, the contest between six boys and six girls from the United States and Europe, all aged 18 years and under, will return in Italy in 2023.

The PGA of America will welcome U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team members to Whistling Straits for an exhibition match on Wednesday, September 22. The team will also be introduced at the Ryder Cup Opening Ceremony and invited to watch Friday’s Ryder Cup competition.

The 43rd Ryder Cup will take place from September 21-26 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin. Plans remain on course to hold the contest with full spectator attendance and under the guidance of public health authorities.

Worthington, Arthur tied atop leaderboard after 1st round at APGA Tour Deere Run

by Debert Cook July 20, 2021

Wyatt Worthington

Byrd, Thornton also under par with final round set Tuesday

July 19, 2021

Silvis, Illinois – July. 19, 2021 – Wyatt Worthington of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and Seth Arthur of Paducah, Kentucky, both shot four-under 67s to take the top spot on the leaderboard Monday at APGA Tour Deere Run, the ninth event of the 2021 APGA Tour season.

Worthington’s round was highlighted by consecutive birdies on holes 13-15 as he turned in a back-nine 33 on the prestigious 7,183-yard, Par 71 course, which hosted the John Deere Classic earlier in July.  Arthur carded an eagle on the 357-yard par 4 14th hole by driving the green with a perfectly placed tee shot  that carried a right-side bunker and bounced up onto the putting surface.  He then sank the 25-footer to surge into contention heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Seth Arthur

Marcus Byrd of Knoxviile, Tennessee, winner of APGA Tour New Orleans in June, shot a two-under 69 that included four back-nine birdies to stand alone in second place.  J.P. Thornton of Houston, winner of the 2020 APGA Tour at TPC Surgarloaf, posted a one-under 70 for fourth place, ahead of a group at even par including Mahindra Lutchman of Orlando, David Lawrence of Moline, Illinois, and Kamaiu Johnson, the Tallahassee native who started three PGA TOUR events earlier this year as a sponsor exemption.

“I stuck to my game plan and approached every shot the exact same way,” stated the 35 year-old Arthur, a former high school football star at Massac County HS in Metropolis, Illinois. “I didn’t start playing golf until late, so this is one of my top accomplishments,” he continued.  “I’m always confident, so I’ll just continue to control what I can control.”    His top APGA Tour finish this year was 10th place at APGA Tour World Golf Village in March.

Worthington’s accomplishments include a successful qualifying stint for the 2019 PGA TOUR Canada event in Toronto and he tied for fourth place earlier this year at APGA Tour World Golf Village.  “Most important was to keep the tee ball in play,” offered the 34 year-old, who described the rough as some of the thickest he’s ever played. “On a course this challenging, you have to seize the opportunities.  I’m going to stick to my process and try to capitalize on opportunities when I can.”  Playing on the APGA Tour since 2016, he tied for seventh place at APGA Tour Scottsdale in April.

APGA Tour Deere Run is the second-to-last tournament in the Lexus Cup Points Race with the APGA Tour Championship at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Georgia, on tap August 9-10. Lexus Cup Point Standings leader Ryan Alford is tied for 14th place at two-over par. Willie Mack, who finished 61st in the John Deere Classic at the same course just days ago, is tied for 18th place at three-over par.

APGA Tour Deere Run wraps up Tuesday with the final round of the 36-hole, $25,000 competition.
All activities are being conducted under social-distancing and health/safety guidelines in conjunction with regional authorities. Scores and additional details are available at www.bluegolf.com<http://www.bluegolf.com

Mariah Stackhouse, Rising!

July 18, 2021 | BY AAGD STAFF

At the Dow Great Lakes Invitational, July 14–17, 2021 at Midland Country Club, Midland, TX, powerhouse player Mariah Stackhouse finished with a final score of -3. The graduate of Stanford University, where she was a four-year All-American, and majored in communications, has been on the rise in her sport of choice for several years, and her competitive experience shows it.

Beginning her rookie year with the LPGA in 2017, Stackhouse has recorded a career-best T8 finish at the 2017 Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic. That same year the Georgia resident played in 15 events, made the cut seven times, and gained $81,678 (114).

In 2018, she accomplished more, recording two top-10 results including a career-best T7 finish at the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer. Of the 26 events she competed she made the cut 20 times, and earned herself $273,260 (67). By 2019, Stackhouse was on fire, recording a season-best finish of T5 at the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer and in 20 competitive events she made eight cuts, gaining $127,365 (100) for the year.

At 27-years old, Stackhouse has a ‘wow’ factor about herself. She’s managed to stay atop the leaderboards, confident and strong in herself, her abilities, and as a KPMG Ambassador which she became ahead of turning pro in 2017. Her early successes in golf are partly the reason why she seems to always stay steady and ready for anything. As a 16-year-old kid, Stackhouse was the player representative on the American Junior Golf Association board. Quite a big responsibility for a teenager.

“I started playing golf at (age) two,” she said to the LPGA earlier this year. “I was a daddy’s girl and followed him everywhere he went, so that meant to the golf course. But I grew up playing right here in the Atlanta area, got my start at an inner-city course downtown and grew from there.

“I played local tours here. My dad was very intentional about the journey. He wouldn’t let me advance to the next level until he felt that I was the best at the (current) level, so it was local, then it was state, then it was regional, and then continuing on to American Junior Golf finally towards the end of my junior career.”

“When I was a young girl, my parents created an affirmation for me that I would repeat to myself in the morning every day before I went to school,” Stackhouse said. “That affirmation was four paragraphs long and it focused on a few things. One, me being a confident young Black woman, a confident person, and a confident athlete. To give you an idea of what that affirmation sounded like, I’ll share a couple of lines. One of my favorites is ‘I know that I can do anything I set my mind to. I am a very proud person with my own ideas and my own direction in life.’

Founded in 1950, the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) is one of the longest-running women’s professional sports associations. But the LPGA has historically struggled with a lack of diversity and inclusion in the game. Today, Stackhouse is the only full-time Black player on the LPGA Tour. She hopes her visibility and influence on-and-off the course will soon change that.

‘Just a Friend’ rapper Biz Markie dead at 57

by Debert Cook July 17, 2021
written by Debert Cook

July 17, 2021 (AOL News)

Biz Markie, the “Clown Prince of Hip-Hop” best known for his 1989 global smash “Just a Friend,” has died, according to his representative, Jenni Izumi. His cause of death has not yet been disclosed, but Izumi said the rapper, singer, DJ, producer, actor, comedian, and writer “peacefully passed away” Friday evening with his wife, Tara Hall, by his side. Markie had been hospitalized in April last year due to complications from Type 2 diabetes, and as of last December he was reportedly living in a Maryland rehabilitation facility after suffering a diabetic coma and stroke. He was 57 years old.

“We are grateful for the many calls and prayers of support that we have received during this difficult time,” Izumi said in a statement. “Biz created a legacy of artistry that will forever be celebrated by his industry peers and his beloved fans whose lives he was able to touch through music, spanning over 35 years. He leaves behind a wife, many family members and close friends who will miss his vibrant personality, constant jokes, and frequent banter.”

Biz Markie was born Marcel Theo Hall on April 8, 1964, in Harlem, and he spent his childhood in Long Island. He launched his hip-hop career in the Manhattan club scene (and later, on the East Coast college circuit), working as a human beatbox for acts like Roxanne Shanté and MC Shan. His debut album, 1988’s Goin’ Off — which featured production by Marley Marl and co-writing by Big Daddy Kane, and showcased Biz’s impressive beatboxing skills — was a respectable success, peaking at No. 90 on the Billboard 200 and at No. 19 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart on the strength of underground tracks like “Make the Music With Your Mouth, Biz,” “Nobody Beats the Biz,” “Vapors,” and “Pickin’ Boogers.”

Unfortunately, Markie never charted another Billboard Hot 100 hit again, and his cartoonish image and puerile humor relegated him to novelty act/one-hit wonder status. On top of that, promotion for his third album, 1991’s I Need a Haircut, was sidelined by a lawsuit from soft rock singer-songwriter Gilbert O’Sullivan, who claimed that Biz’s track “Alone Again” featured an unauthorized sample of O’Sullivan’s “Alone Again (Naturally).”

When Markie lost that case, I Need a Haircut was pulled from circulation; the court’s landmark ruling, Grand Upright Music Ltd. v. Warner Bros. Records Inc., changed the entire music industry, with record labels now required to clear all samples on all future releases. Biz’s follow-up LP was 1993’s cheekily titled All Samples Cleared!, but his career was unable to rebound after the negative publicity. It would be decade before he released another album, 2003’s Weekend Warrior, which turned out to be his last.

SILVIS, Illinois (July 15, 2021) – SILVIS, Illinois (July 15, 2021) – Willie Mack will try to continue his string of top performances and Ryan Alford will attempt to put a stranglehold on the Lexus Cup Points Standings title when the APGA Tour returns to action July 19-20 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. The ninth event of the APGA Tour season takes place just eight days after Lucas Glover’s victory in the PGA TOUR’s John Deere Classic at the prominent Tournament Players Club (TPC) course, one of five hosting APGA Tour events this year.

The African American Golfer’s Digest is providing this coverage as a public service. Please support our publication by subscribing today.

Mack has been on a roll, taking advantage of sponsor exemptions to make the cut at consecutive PGA TOUR events, finishing tied for 64th in the Rocket Mortgage Classic in his hometown of Detroit and tied for 71st in the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run last week. Mack, the APGA Tour 2019 Player of the Year, also made the cut at the Korn Ferry Tour’s BMW Charity Pro-Am in the spring.

Ryan Alford – photo credit Mark Lowry

Alford, the APGA Tour’s surprise first-year player from Louisiana Tech, leads the Lexus Cup Point Standings with 1280 points on the strength of wins at APGA Tour Scottsdale in April and APGA Tour Louisville in May. Alford is 13 points ahead of Marcus Byrd (1267), who won the most recent event, APGA Tour New Orleans, on June 2. On their heels is Rovonta Young, winner of the APGA Tour World Golf Village tournament in March, with 1005 points. For all three players, the APGA Tour wins were their first professional victories.

Each tournament victory is worth 600 Lexus Cup points and the final regular season event of the year, the APGA Tour Championship, is set for August 8-10 at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Georgia.  Thus, all of the Lexus Cup contenders are in another loaded APGA Tour field along with four of the five top players in the APGA Collegiate Rankings.  In partnership with the PGA TOUR’s PGA University, the APGA Collegiate Rankings evaluated results from the spring NCAA season and is rewarding the top five competitors with exemptions into APGA Tournaments for the rest of the year. Mulbe Dillard IV (ranked 1st), Mahindra Lutchman (2nd), Cameron Riley (3rd) and Prince Cunningham (4th), all of Florida A&M, will be in the field at TPC Deere Run.

The defending Lexus Cup Point Standings Champion is Tim O’Neal who also won the title in  2018. O’Neal, who now has his eyes on The PGA TOUR Champions at the age of 48, has over 150 starts on the Korn Ferry Tour. In addition to Mack, other previous APGA Tour Lexus Cup Point Standings Champions are Kevin Hall in 2017 and David Lawrence in 2016. The winner of the Lexus Cup becomes the APGA Tour Player of the Year and earns a $17,500 bonus for season-long excellence.

In just the past six months, five APGA Tour players have teed off in 13 Korn Ferry Tour or PGA TOUR events via sponsor exemption or through qualifying opportunities. Mack has a total of six starts, Kamaiu Johnson four and Kevin Hall, O’Neal and Dillard one each.

Upcoming on the APGA Tour schedule is the newly-minted Billy Horschel APGA Tour Invitational presented by Cisco, set for July 29-31 in Jacksonville, Florida. The special event will bring together 18 top APGA Tour competitors at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass for tournament play and career development programs in an initiative hosted by the six-time PGA TOUR winner.  The field will include the top players from the APGA Collegiate Rankings and the activity consists of a pro-am, a roundtable and seminars plus a 36-hole competition at the annual home of the PGA TOUR’s Players Championship.

APGA Tour Deere Run will be conducted under social-distancing and health/safety guidelines in conjunction with regional authorities. The 36-hole event offers a $25,000 purse.

The APGA Tour Presented by Lexus is a nonprofit organization with the mission of bringing greater diversity to the game of golf. Now in its 12th year, the tour consists of 13 events offering over $350,000 in prize money.

The 2021 APGA Tour Lexus Cup Point Standings top 20 are listed below:

Bailey Davis holes out for an eagle at the U.S. Girls’ Junior and heads to finals

Bailey Davis never led during 18 holes of regulation against Chloe Johnson in Wednesday’s U.S. Girls’ Junior round of 64, grinding around Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase just to get her match square. At times, she admitted afterward, she was fighting her swing.

So as the White Plains, Md., resident stepped up to her approach on the first playoff hole, the 369-yard par-4 No. 1, Davis told herself simply to land it within range for a reasonable birdie opportunity, especially given her opponent had overshot the green.

For inspiration, Davis’s caddie, Joe Pakaluk, told her immediately before the shot, mostly in jest, that there was $500 in it for her in the unlikely event of a hole-out.

Davis never had to take the putter out of her bag and is potentially a bit thicker in the wallet to boot. Her shot with a 60-degree wedge ended with the ball landing several feet beneath the pin, bouncing and disappearing into the hole for an eagle on the way to a exhilarating 1-up triumph.

“The moment it fell in I was pretty shocked,” said a grinning Davis, a recent graduate of North Point High in Waldorf, roughly a one-hour drive from the course. “I didn’t think that would actually happen. I was more worried about winning than the $500.”

The shot catapulted Davis, seeded third after shooting an even-par 140 over two rounds of stroke play, into Thursday’s round of 32. Davis will face Chloe Lam, who beat Faith Choi of Frederick, Md., 2 up. Choi was the only local player other than Davis to advance to match play.

No. 1 seed Rose Zhang, meanwhile, had little trouble advancing to the round of 32, defeating No. 64 seed Lauryn Nguyen, 6 and 4. Zhang is the top-ranked female amateur in the world and the prohibitive favorite to win this event. She claimed the U.S. Women’s Amateur title last year at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville.

Hiawatha golf clubhouse may soon be named after civil rights pioneer

by Debert Cook July 16, 2021
written by Debert Cook

July 16, 2021

In the early 1940s, African American golfers were allowed to play most public courses in the Twin Cities, but often at odd hours of the day, and they weren’t allowed inside the clubhouse.

Hiawatha Golf Course was no exception to that rule, but Solomon Hughes Sr. loved playing at Hiawatha and had recently won a national title on the United Golfers Association tour, which was a pro circuit for African Americans who were barred from playing the all-white Professional Golfers’ Association tour.

According to two of Hughes’s children, Shirley Hughes and Solomon Hughes, Jr., their father pressed Hiawatha Golf Course to open its doors to African American golfers. In 1948, the course changed its policy and permitted Black golfers to enter and use all of the facilities in the clubhouse.

“I absolutely remember hearing about the fact they could not come into the clubhouse,” Shirley Hughes said. “I recall, vividly, him telling me that story about how they could not come into the clubhouse at all, and finally I think he was just sick of it.”

Rhoden faces three counts of murder, three counts of aggravated assault and two counts of kidnapping. He is being held without bond following a brief hearing last week.

From there, after winning often on the all-Black UGA Tour, Solomon Hughes Sr. turned his sights toward breaking down racial barriers on the all-white PGA Tour. He petitioned to play in the PGA’s St. Paul Open but was denied for three years. Then, in 1952, the St. Paul Open decided to offer Hughes and Ted Rhodes invitations, making them the first African American golfers to play in a PGA-sponsored event in Minnesota.

“I think of him as a civil rights pioneer because of the things he went through and the things he accomplished,” said Solomon Hughes, Jr. “But, we as a family never heard him complain and he never was bitter about any of the things he endured.”

Eventually, Solomon Hughes Sr. became the club pro at Hiawatha Golf Course and continued to teach the game to many young golfers.

He died in 1987 at the age of 78.

Next Wednesday, July 21, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is expected to approve naming the Hiawatha clubhouse after Solomon Hughes Sr. to honor his legacy.

Sanford’s Lewis takes 4 shot lead into final round of Asheville’s 61st Skyview Open Pro/Am

Zane Lewis leads the 61st Skyview Open Pro/Am Golf Tournament by four shots after shooting 7-under 65 for the second straight day at Asheville Golf Course. Photo courtesy of Will Chilton.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The lead is four shots for Zane Lewis, a comfortable margin if not for the resumes of his closest pursuers.

The 24-year-old from Sanford shot 7-under 65 for a second straight day to maintain the pro division lead Wednesday at the 61st Skyview Open Pro/Am Golf Tournament presented by Callaway at Asheville Golf Course.

Four shots back at 10-under 134 are eight-time Skyview champion Greg Parker of Marion and Asheville’s Noah Ratner, who won the 2015 and ‘16 titles and finished second to Parker the last two times the event was played, in 2018 and ‘19.

Thomas Padgett of Charlotte (66-68-134) and Skip Taylor of Flat Rock (68-66-134) are also tied for second with Parker and Ratner.

Lewis admitted to feeling a little lucky after making eagles on two par-4s in his second round – he drilled a 40-foot putt after driving the third hole and chipped in from the rough from 42 yards on No. 12.

“I four-putted the (par-5) second hole for bogey, my only bogey this week,” said Lewis, who won his first pro tournament in May.

“So the eagle at No. 3 got me going.”

Lewis also closed fast with birdies on three of his last five holes. “On a course like this, you have to make a lot of birdies, especially with the soft greens,” he said. “I’m going to have to fire at the pins (in the final round Thursday). “

Parker, 55, shot 5-under 67 for the second consecutive round and has 10 birdies and no bogeys through 36 holes.

“You never know what tomorrow brings,” said Parker, who is 51-under par in his last eight rounds at the Skyview over three years.

“I know I’m going to have to make some birdies (Thursday), how many I don’t know.”

Ratner, 30, who starred at Asheville High and Guilford College and is now an assistant pro at Biltmore Forest CC, was 7-under through 17 holes but made double-bogey 5 on No. 18 after hitting his ball into the trees.

“I’ve made three bogeys and a double bogey, or I guess I would be leading,” said Ratner.

Defending Skyview amateur champion Kyle Scruggs is in good shape to repeat after a second round of 5-under 67.

The 33-year old teacher and middle-school golf coach from Chesenee, S.C., is at 13-under par 131 after 36 holes, four shots ahead of Cody Mincey of Asheville (67-68-135) and Joey Squiers (67-68-135) of Raleigh.

Beth Thompson of Clyde (77-78-155) enjoys a 12-shot lead over Brevard’s Kristen Malone (86-81-167) in the women’s division.

AGC employee Jeff Long, a former Skyview amateur champion, and Robert Straub of Asheville are tied at 5-under at the top of the senior amateur division at 5-under 139..

Fred Edwards, director of golf at Lake Junaluska GC, is one shot back.

Final-round play is Thursday, with amateurs teeing off at 8 a.m. and the pros at 2 p.m.

According to Skyview Golf Association officials, the pro purse is $29,000, with $5,500 going to the winner.

SGA officials said the top four amateurs in each flight will receive gift certificates – $530 for first place, $300 for second, $220 for third, $190 for fourth.
