HAROLD VARNER III RETURNED TO SCOTLAND TO PLAY IN THE BRITISH OPEN

Harold Varner, III competed in the 2016 British Open at Royal Troon in Troon, Scotland, July 14 – 17, 2016. For Varner, this marked an important milestone and notable return – coming full circle to play as a professional golfer in Scotland.

The countryside was most likely a familiar sight for Varner who first played on Scotland courses many years ago, as a budding player, through a special visitors program sponsored by the Bill Dickey Scholarship Association and the New Links St. Andrews Program.

Varner, an Akron, Ohio, native, enjoying international success, building on attention and experience he gained through the BDSA. His official PGA World Golf ranked at 155 and he stands at a 70.926 scoring average. The East Carolina University graduate, now 25-years old, turned pro in 2012, is determined to remain in stride and to continue reaching his ultimate goal of winning a PGA Tour event.

Having made par on the par-4 18th hole at Congressional Country Club in June during the Quicken Loans National in Bethesda, That Sunday, Varner finished seventh at 9 under par after shooting a 1-under 70, qualifying for a spot in the British Open. Henrik Stenson took home the win: 68-65-68-63 264 (-20)

Varner’s performance at the British Open: +6: (71-72-75-77) for a total score of 295.

The British Open began on Sunday, July 17, 2016, at Royal Troon in Scotland.

Bill Dickey Invitational Alums Make History as Players Wow the Golf World in Professional Tournaments

(July 22, 2016) Portland, OR and Troon, Scotland: Young golfers who have won or placed in Bill Dickey Invitational (BDI) Tournaments are currently making history and wowing crowds all over the world. BDI alums are among the first group of four black women to ever compete in the LPGA Tour at the same time. Cheyenne Woods, Mariah Stackhouse, Sadena Parks, and Ginger Howard played in the 2016 Cambia Portland Classic Presented by JTBC in Portland, OR, June 30 – July 3.

BDI Alum Harold Varner, III just competed in the 2016 British Open at Royal Troon in Troon, Scotland, July 14 – 17, 2016. Over the past 30 years, the Bill Dickey Scholarship Association has awarded over $3.5 million in scholarships to more than 1000 minority students nationwide. Deserving students have used the BDSA gift to further their education and career goals. As a result of the Bill Dickey Invitational held annually, program youth have achieved academic success and impressive wins and honors at various collegiate, amateur and professional golf competitions.

Bill Dickey’s legacy continues with the Scholarship Association’s annual major fundraising event, The Bill Dickey East/West Golf Classic – January 13-15, 2017, the weekend prior to the MLK Holiday and will feature a scramble format on Saturday. In honor of the 17^th Annual Original Tee Golf Classic Presented by Lexus, the premiere African American amateur golf event celebrating diverse industry leaders and legends, Mt. Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas presented founder and PGA Director Wendell Haskins with a special proclamation.

Presented by Lexus, the event raised over $10,000 for the PGA REACH and PGA Junior League Golf League that provides opportunities for diverse junior golfers to participate in PGA Jr. League Golf in the PGA of America Met Section.

2016 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk, Fun to Drive On and Off-Road

The new 2016 Jeep Renegade looks cool, drives cool and is full of cool features. That was the idea when Fiat, Chrysler and Jeep designers and engineers got together for the first time to produce a small SUV that would shake up the class and compete with the Kia Soul.

The design and engineering team put a lot of thought into making a youthful, small SUV that is capable and attention grabbing.

I tested the Trailhawk version of the Renegade, based on the Fiat 500L platform. The Trailhawk was engineered for both on and off-road capability. Borrowing 4×4 technology from the Jeep Cherokee, the Jeep Renegade offers two of the most advanced and intelligent 4×4 systems in its class.

It has five driving modes, (Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud modes, plus exclusive Rock mode on the Trailhawk model) including a four-wheel drive that can handle very steep descents, more wheel space for ground clearance and SRA off-road tires.

The Trailhawk suspension includes two systems, the Jeep Active Drive and Active Drive Low 4×4 for on and off-road driving. Both can transfer torque to any one wheel for optimal traction. I did find it fun after I made a wrong turn into a construction site and had maneuver my way out.

The Renegade’s fuel economy is significantly enhanced by the segment’s first disconnecting rear axle and power take-off unit, which engages Jeep Active Drive and Active Drive Low 4×4 systems only when 4×4 traction is needed.

The 2016 Jeep Renegade is available in four trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk models.

Renegade prices start at less than $20,000 and goes up to the mid-twenties for the Trailhawk model.

Tiger Woods Withdraws from Baltusrol Site of the 2016 PGA Championship and will Miss Remainder of Season

It’s a never before seen happening for Tiger Woods, as for the first time in his professional career, he will miss all four major championships in one season.

The PGA of America announced earlier today (July 19, 2016) that Woods will not be a part of the leaderboard during next week’s PGA Championship. The famed tournament is being held at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield Township, N.J.

“We have been in contact with Tiger’s agent, Mark Steinberg, and he informed us today that our four-time PGA champion will be unable to join us at Baltusrol Golf Club next week for the 98th PGA Championship,” the PGA of America said in a statement.

The former number one world golfer has not played a competitive round since undergoing two surgeries last fall season, specifically, back operations.

Tiger Fans across the world are shocked at this latest news. However with the many precarious situations that have faced Woods during his recent tournaments, the decision to withdraw from the PGA Championship comes off more reasonable. In May, it is remembered how he vividly dunked three consecutive wedge shots into the water during the Quicken Loans National media day. The, just a short month later, on the Quicken Loans broadcast, Woods was reluctant to divulge whether or not he would even play competitively during the rest of the year.

“I don’t know,” Woods said on CBS. “I want to play; put it that way. I want to play. I don’t know if I will, but I do want to. But I’m trying. I’m trying each and every day. I’m doing my workouts. … I’m working my tail off.”

So now, although, it seems for sure that he will be out for the rest of the 2015-2016 season, however, according to Golfweek.com, the Golf Channel sent corresponded to Tiger Woods’ Manager Mark Steinberg, who emailed this response back:

“(Tiger’s) continuing to make progress, but simply not ready for PGA. Will not play in the ’15/’16 season and will continue to rehab and work hard to then assess when he starts play for the ’16/’17 season.”

Now at 40-years old, Woods has a long string of wins under his belt. He has won 79 PGA titles, including 14 major championships, ranking second all-time in both categories. But, now, the former stellar golfer hasn’t competed on Tour since August (during the Wyndham Championship, in which he tied for 10^th). He finished fourth at the 2005 PGA Championship, the last time the major visited Baltusrol.

With the news of withdrawal, Woods is adding his eighth time for missing a major since the 2011 U.S. Open. The 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines was the last time that he won one of golf’s four biggest titles, outlasting Rocco Mediate in a 19-hole Monday playoff, only for Woods to discover afterwards that he had a broken leg

After Breakfast we will be heading to one of the most important Golf Course of Italy: Marco Simone Golf Course Championship Course. In 2022 this course will host the Ryder’s Cup.

Thanks to the wide variety of tees, each hole can be played from a variety of different points, bringing into play always new obstacles and providing a setting that is ideal for both beginners and professionals.

Day 5

Olgiata Golf Course

After Breakfast we will be heading to one of the oldest Golf Course of Italy: Olgiata Golf Course. Located 15 miles north of Rome along the Via Cassia on the Olgiata quiet residential complex, this golf club is a magnificent classic tree-lined parkland golf course. Opened 1961 it features 27 holes (18 holes West Course and 9 holes East Course) designed by English architect C. Kenneth Cotton and restyled by architect Jim Fazio in 1996.

During the years it hosted many important international tournaments including the Eisenhower Trophy in 1964, the World Cup on 1968 and 1984, the European Tour Italian Open on 1973 and 2002 (won by Ian Poulter) and the Challenge Tour Roma Open in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Tee time is scheduled for our group.

Lunch will be served at the Golf Course.

Upon arrival walking tour of the city center of Florence with the visit to the famous Cathedral and the Baptistery,

Local Junior Golfers to Compete in Optimist International Junior Golf Championships

More than 650 of golf’s top young players are competing in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The tournament will bring together some of the world’s most talented young competitors, many of whom have the potential to become leading collegiate and professional golfers in the future. Quincy Ahlias Leonard from Montgomery, AL in the Boys 10-11 age division will compete in the championships on July 20-25.

To view the golfers’ age divisions and hometowns, click here. Junior golfers ages 10 to 18 from around the world play in the annual tournament. July 20-25, 2016 — Boys 10-11, 12-13 and Girls 10-12 July 25-30, 2016 — Boys 14-15 and Girls 13-14 July 31- August 4, 2016 — Boys 16-18 and Girls 15-18.

The Optimist prides itself as an international event, with players representing 42 states, six Canadian provinces and 25 total nations. Former champions and top finishers of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships include PGA TOUR members Jonathan Byrd, Jason Day, Bill Haas, and Jeff Overton in addition to LPGA members Stacy Lewis, Brittany Lincicome and Lexi Thompson. A number of other well-known professional golfers have participated in Optimist-sponsored championships, including Ernie Els, Nancy Lopez, Davis Love III, Michelle McGann, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.

The Optimist returns to PGA National Resort and Spa for the 20th consecutive year. Four of PGA National’s championship layouts are used for the event – the Champion, Palmer, Fazio and Squire courses. PGA National is home to the PGA TOUR’s Honda Classic and has been host to the PGA Seniors Championship, the 1987 PGA Championship and the 1983 Ryder Cup. Optimist International is one of the world’s largest service club organizations with more than 2,500 Optimist Clubs dedicated to “Bringing out the best in children, in their communities and in themselves,”

Optimists conduct positive service projects that reach more than 6 million young people each year. The Optimist Junior Golf program is one of the organization’s most prominent projects. Scores, photos, news stories and tee times will be updated throughout the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships.
