Native Links: The Surprising History of the First Native Americans in Golf
Native Links is an engaging and thought-provoking exploration of Indigenous contributions to the history of golf in America. Mark Wagner, PGA, aka “Dr. Mark”, based in Massachusetts, is a golf historian and the founding director of the Binienda Center for Civic Engagement at Worcester State University. His captivating narrative weaves together compelling stories, oral histories, and personal encounters to reveal the deep-rooted connection between Native Americans and the game of golf, often overlooked in traditional accounts.
The journey begins with Oscar Smith Bunn, a Shinnecock Montauk Native who competed in the 1896 and 1899 U.S. Opens, and spans to modern stars like Notah Begay III and Gabby Lemieux. From early pioneers to contemporary champions, the book demonstrates how Indigenous players have shaped and enriched the sport and includes a glossary of the 55 Native American owned courses in America.
Beyond individual stories, Native Links delves into the broader cultural resurgence among Native communities. It highlights the role of golf course construction on tribal lands, fueled by advocacy, land reclamation efforts, and gaming revenues. These projects reflect a renewed sense of identity and pride, tying the sport to a long history of resilience and innovation.
The author shares a personal journey of discovery, learning from Native golfers and their communities. With humor and humility, the book captures lessons from elders, personal defeats on the green, and the enduring power of shared stories.
Essential for golf enthusiasts and history buffs alike, Native Links is a must-read for those seeking the full story of golf’s legacy in America. $29.99 (hardcover/288 pages). Available at Back9Press.com and Amazon.com
Teeing Off With Journalist Glenn Jones and His Love Affair With Golf
Glenn Jones, a seasoned journalist and avid golfer, was born in Bermuda and currently resides in Boston, Massachusetts. His journey to Boston stems from a professional opportunity in 2021, marking his return to Massachusetts after having lived there for 15 years earlier in his career. At 47-years-old, Glenn is married to Camille Jones, his supportive partner of 13 years, with whom he shares a son. Camille’s encouragement, whether by inquiring optimistically about his games or supporting his passion for the sport, has been a cornerstone of Glenn’s golfing pursuits. “When I get home, she always optimistically asks if I won,” he shares with a laugh. “I almost never win.”
Professionally, Glenn anchors the news for NBC Boston, a role he has excelled in for over a decade. His educational background in broadcast journalism from Emerson College laid the foundation for his successful career in television. Golf has always been a part of Glenn’s life, with roots tracing back to his childhood in Bermuda. Growing up near Port Royal Golf Course—now home to the PGA’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship—he and his friends learned the game while navigating the course on their way to school.

“The game has taught me patience and resilience,” he reflects. “It’s about showing up, embracing the challenge, and finding joy in the journey.”
Though Glenn does not currently belong to a formal golf club, he was once a member of Tucker’s Point Golf Club in Bermuda. His handicap of +12 reflects his commitment to the sport, even as he humorously admits to struggling with his short game and a slow rate of improvement. Charity tournaments and weekend outings with friends keep his competitive spirit alive, and his unique approach to handling golfing challenges—embracing the camaraderie and fun of the game—is as refreshing as it is relatable.
In addition to his professional and sporting pursuits, Glenn actively engages with his audience, often intertwining his love for golf with his on-screen presence. Whether forecasting the weekend weather or inspiring others to embrace golf’s joys, Glenn brings passion, humor, and authenticity to all he does. Tune in weeknights to Channel 10 NBC Boston to see Glenn Jones.

Butterfield Bermuda PGA Tour Championship Celebrates Island Excellence, Kim Swan Honored with Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award as Rafael Campos Becomes First Caribbean Champion
(Southampton, Bermuda – November 19, 2024) – The 2024 Butterfield Bermuda PGA Tour Championship concluded with historic moments celebrating the shared legacy of Bermuda and the Caribbean in golf. The Honorable Kim Swan, JP MP was awarded the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award by the Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA). His award presentation was followed by a milestone victory for the Caribbean, as Puerto Rico’s Rafael Campos became the first Caribbean Champion of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship PGA Tour, claiming the coveted Bermuda Triangle Trophy.
The Caribbean connection was further emphasised with the presence of CARICOM representatives, including Prime Minister Mitchell of Grenada, head of Caricom, who joined Bermuda’s Premier at the tournament. Representatives of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) were also on-island to witness the event, which underscores Bermuda’s strong ties to the region, particularly as the island advances its bid to upgrade its CARICOM membership from associate to full.
The award recognized Kim Swan for his lifelong contributions to the sport of golf, spanning his trailblazing playing career and his impactful work in politics and on industry boards, which have significantly shaped Bermuda’s golf legacy. Swan has been an advocate for making golf more accessible and promoting Bermuda as a premier golfing destination, using the sport as a platform to foster youth development and community engagement.
Reflecting on the honor, Kim Swan, JP, MP remarked:
“This award is humbling and reminds me of 1987 when I hired Bermuda’s first two women golf professionals and staged an International Ladies Pro Am in their honor – in the spirit of the power of belief, perseverance and in the potential of all – I envisage us hosting the LPGA Tour Pros in Bermuda someday. Golf has been my life’s passion, not just as a sport but as a means to create opportunities for all people and to showcase Bermuda’s beauty and culture to the world.”

Wayne Caines, Chairman of the Bermuda Tourism Authority, praised Swan’s enduring influence:
“Kim Swan has been a trailblazer in every sense, from his pioneering golf career to his dedication to making golf more inclusive. His vision and commitment have elevated both Bermuda and the region on the world stage. And his work inspires a legacy that will resonate for generations to come.”
Tracy Berkeley, CEO of the Bermuda Tourism Authority, highlighted how this recognition aligns with Bermuda’s National Tourism Plan:
“Kim Swan’s life’s work perfectly embodies the principles of Bermuda’s National Tourism Plan. His contributions reflect the importance of connecting our cultural and sporting heritage with opportunities for community growth and inclusivity. We are proud to honor him during this extraordinary championship.”

Kim Swan’s career has been marked by a commitment to breaking barriers—first as a golfer competing internationally and then as a leader dedicated to preserving Bermuda’s golfing history and expanding its accessibility. His influence continues to inspire young Bermudians, particularly those from underserved communities, to see the sport as a pathway to opportunity and growth.
Rafael Campos’ victory in the Championship is a groundbreaking moment for the region. The 2024 Butterfield Bermuda PGA Tour Championship’s grand finale marked the first time a Caribbean player won the Bermuda Triangle Trophy and only the second time a Puerto Rican—following the legendary Chi Chi Rodriguez—claimed a PGA Tour title. This achievement underscores the tournament’s growing significance as a platform for celebrating regional and global golf excellence.

The WhyGolf Pressure Plate is a training aid designed to improve golf swings by helping players understand and refine their pressure shifts. Incorrect pressure shifts, often linked to swaying, can disrupt balance, reduce accuracy, and hinder power generation in a swing. The Pressure Plate addresses this by providing real-time feedback, enabling golfers to develop proper weight transfer without unnecessary lateral movement.
Made from durable, heavy-duty materials, the device is versatile enough for indoor and outdoor practice. It helps players feel and visualize the correct movements during their backswing and downswing phases, encouraging consistent and powerful shots. The Pressure Plate is simple to use and integrates seamlessly with other golf drills, making it suitable for all skill levels.
