“HISTORIC CLEARVIEW GOLF CLUB”
It has been a while since my last blog , however, I am ready to get started for the 2014 season. It has been a busy off season but for me, busy is good!
Last fall we began pulling archival items together for the USGA as they were planning on opening their next exhibit. The USGA in my opinion has lead the way to open the door to preserve the history of all golf, especially focusing on the history and contributions of African Americans in golf. As so many people have passed on from this earth, much of our history begins to disappear.

Many of you will remember the UGA which was the start of my golf tournaments in 1958. Thank goodness my mom and our family were very much involved with the UGA so I was able to find a large collection of those materials which my mom had saved.
The USGA has opened an exhibit, “More Than A Game” and I am proud to say that the golf course my father built in 1946 is a major focal point of that exhibit. As a matter of fact, there are 2 very large banners hanging outside the USGA Headquarters and the picture on the banner is, Bill Powell.
Please visit the USGA in Far Hills, NJ. where you will witness many archival items from Clearview and our family and other individuals from African American golf history. The exhibit will be open for 2 years, but -Don’t Wait – for 2 years before you go.

I just think that of the 16,000 golf courses in the United States, our governing body of golf is focusing on 1 golf course, Clearview, and the contributions that Bill and Marcella Powell made to the game of golf – contributions and sacrifices that have opened the doors for many of us to be able to play.
Susan Wasser, the assistant director of the Museum did an outstanding job of putting it all together with the blessings of the director of the Museum, Robert Williams and Rand Jerris and Mike Davis.
Early next month, the World Golf Hall of Fame will open up a permanent exhibit as a Tribute to the History of African Americans in Golf. Once again Clearview Golf Club and William Powell will play a very prominent role as the history of African Americans in golf are recognized.

All of this recognition to what people of color have contributed to golf is so long overdue, so hopefully some of those who fought those early battles and relatives of those individuals will be able to realize how grateful many of us are to be able to stand on their shoulders.
Now that I am back into blogging, I will in future blogs get you caught up on various activities going on here at Clearview and also things in which I have been involved.
If you saw the LPGA Founders Cup at all, you may have seen me sitting behind the 18th green along with Marilynn Smith and Shirley Spork. They are 2 of the 13 founding members of the LPGA and we were greeted and thanked by the players as they walked off the green. Actually Kathy Whitworth and I were recipients of the Pioneer Award presented by the LPGA. Will tell you more in the next blog.
In the meantime, get ready to enjoy the golf season.
