SILENT STRUGGLE: The Absence Of African American Women At PGA Merchandise Show WGD Panel Discussion — Women As Economic Influencers & WGD “Inspire Action” Awards

by AAGD Staff

The PGA Merchandise Show Women’s Golf Day (WGD) Panel Discussion on “Women as Economic Influencers” and the WGD “Inspire Action” Awards are set to return for 2024, promising insights from industry experts on developing authentic relationships with the female audience in the golf market. Unfortunately, the panel lacks representation of African American women, both in discussion and award recognition, a fact revealed in the WGD press release today.

Elisa Gaudet, Founder of Women’s Golf Day, expressed regret for the absence and when asked by this publication stated, “No I am sorry we do not have any this year,” while acknowledging the desire to increase awareness of African Americans in golf. The panel includes 1980s supermodel Kim Alexis, a recent golf enthusiast and newly appointed WGD Ambassador. The lineup, moderated by Elisa Gaudet, also features Rachel Carter, Senior Membership Director at the NGCOA, and representatives from The PGA, as outlined in the press release.

Elisa Gaudet reflected on the success of Women’s Golf Day in 2023, citing the global reach and the economic influence women demonstrated through figures like Taylor Swift, the Barbie movie, and Beyonce. Emphasizing the potential for the golf industry to tap into female spending power across various aspects, the diverse panel aims to share insights into revenue generators specific to the golf sector.

The event will also celebrate the 2024 Inspire Action Award winners, recognizing individuals and locations aligning with WGD’s commitment to Engaging, Empower, and Support women globally. However, the absence of African American women from this recognition remains a notable concern.

This year’s Action Award winners are:

o    Natalie Farahani of Dobson Ranch Golf Course, USA
o    Nicki Hirayama, Director of the Japan Golf Association, Japan
o    Lissette De Los Santos, Centro Español, Dominican Republic
o    The Links at Crowbush Cove, PEI’s Finest Golf Group, Canada

To further engage attendees, Women’s Golf Day will be represented at the booth of long-term partner GloveIt on the show floor. Information will be available throughout the event, with a dedicated WGD representative present to address inquiries on specified days. The program will be held on Thursday, January 25, from 10:00am – 11:00am, in Room W312A.
