When most people hear the word “virtual tournament” they may think about computer video gaming and not many would associate it with an actual golf tournament. However, Maxine Granstan of Lakeland, Florida, has taken the virtual golf concept to the next level, literally, using an App to host a golf tournament charity fundraiser to serve a great cause.
Thanks to the app developer, GolfStatus, Maxine––a newcomer to golf tournament organizing– has arranged a “Swings Against Strokes” event whereby golfers can register for the virtual tournament, play their round in a four person scramble at one of 5 selected golf courses at states across the Southeast corridor of the U.S., and then, upload their scores into an electronic scorecard where winners will be determined.
“May is national Stroke month,” said Maxine who resides in Lakeland. Originally from Washington, DC, the Strayer University graduate served 23-years as a government consultant as a program analyst. “With the pandemic this year, my company, Advent Home Care Alliance, was severely impacted by the virus and stroke numbers have really increased for our clients, community, and caregivers,” said the President of her 3-year-old company. Advent Home Care Alliance helps families with veterans, seniors, and persons with disabilities with comprehensive care management services.
Maxine started planning the tournament six months ago and the goal is to bring everyone together for a good cause with most of the proceeds benefitting local survivors and support groups.
The golf tournament App is free and is available to both players and spectators. Interested players can register online at http://www.ahcall.org or by downloading the app at https://golfstatus.com/download. Registration opens on May 1 and ends on May 22. In conjunction wth the virtual tournament is an in-person event that is happing on May 25 at Cleveland Heights Golf Course in Lakeland, Fla. Registration starts at 6:30 AM and shotgun starts at 8 AM.
