Tiger Woods told police he had been “talking to the president” shortly after his car crash, according to bodycam footage released by authorities in Florida.
The 15-time major champion, 50, was involved in a rollover crash on March 27 in Jupiter Island, Florida, after attempting to overtake another vehicle and clipping a trailer. Although he was not seriously injured, Woods was arrested at the scene and later charged with driving under the influence, property damage, and refusing to submit to a lawful test.
Footage from the scene shows Woods on his phone moments after the crash. As an officer approached and asked him to remain nearby, Woods ended the call and stated that he had just been speaking with “the president.” It remains unclear whether he was referring to President Donald Trump.
Police reports indicate Woods appeared disoriented and showed signs of impairment, including lethargy and bloodshot eyes. Officers also discovered prescription medication, including hydrocodone, in his possession. Woods told authorities he had taken medication earlier that day but denied consuming alcohol.
During questioning, Woods said he briefly looked down at his phone before the crash occurred, describing the moment as happening suddenly. “I look down at my phone and all of a sudden… boom,” he said in the footage.
Following his arrest, Woods was held for several hours before being released on bail. Court documents show he has pleaded not guilty and requested a jury trial as the case moves forward.
The incident adds to a series of past driving-related issues for Woods, who has also undergone multiple surgeries in recent years. In the aftermath, he announced plans to step away from golf temporarily to focus on his health and recovery.
