Three is a charm, they say, and so is the announcement tweeted earlier today by Tiger Woods. The golfing great plans to tee up next week in the Northern Trust for the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

This will make for the third year in a row that the recovering golfer plays in the event, albeit his participation ended early last season when he withdrew following the opening round. During his professional career, Woods has played in the Northern Trust 10 times. Notably, his best finish is T2 on two separate occasions.

The start will be just Woods’ sixth on the season, and only his third since the PGA Tour’s restart. His tournament scors have been mixed since the return to golf as he finished T40 at the Memorial in July and T37 at the PGA Championship last week. A reprieve came last October when he won at the Zozo Championship.

WILL HE QUALIFY?

At 47th in the FedEx Cup standings, Woods is in good shape to qualify for the following week’s BMW Championship. The tournament, however, is limited to the top 70 players on the points list. So, should Woods qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship, he has his work cut out for him to breakthrough to the top 30.

More good news would great golf fans should Woods qualify for the Tour Championship because this would mean that the former number one player in the world he has the potential to play in four events in five weeks; this is considerably, being that Woods keeps a very regimented schedule for himself.

Following the PGA Championship, Woods said, “Well, that’s potentially what could happen, and we’ve been training for that….Trying to get my strength and endurance up to make sure that I can handle that type of workload. We knew once I started playing again when I committed to Memorial that this was going to be a heavy workload, and my training sessions, we’ve been pushing it pretty hard, making sure that I kept my strength and endurance up.”
