The Virginia African American Cultural Center (VAACC) in Virginia Beach is hosting a series of events throughout June 2025 to commemorate Juneteenth, celebrating African American heritage and resilience. These events aim to bring the community together through music, art, and cultural expression.

Located in Virginia Beach, the VAACC is dedicated to celebrating, preserving, and showcasing the rich history, culture, and contributions of African Americans in Virginia. Through educational programs, cultural events, public art, and community partnerships, VAACC fosters understanding, pride, and engagement across diverse communities. Complimenting its efforts, the VAACC supports golf to promote diversity, wellness, and community engagement, honors African American golf history, and uses the sport as a platform to foster networking, mentorship, and cultural celebration across generations.

“We are so excited to host our Fourth Annual Golf Tournament” said Dr. Angela Gregg, VAACC Vice Chair, and chair of the Signature Golf Tournament “We had such remarkable success with the tournament last year and are looking forward to another amazing event this year. Our sponsors are so generous and supportive, and we appreciate them very much because of their support our golf tournament is a success.”

The VAACC golf tournament is open to anyone who wants to spend a beautiful day playing 18 holes of golf and supporting the VAACC, which curates, cultivates, and communicates the story of Virginia’s African American history and culture for generations to come. “People can help us build a cultural center that will make a difference in teaching about the richness and diversity of the African American experience and will transcend racial boundaries, uniting the history of many older communities by sharing stories that have shaped the fabric of the Commonwealth of Virginia,” stated Dr. Gregg. Interested players, sponsors, and volunteers may register for the golf tournament at www.vaaccvb.org

On June 19, as part of the Juneteenth celebrations, the VAACC will host its 4th Annual Signature Golf Tournament at Cypress Point Country Club in Virginia Beach. This event provides an opportunity for community members to engage in a friendly competition while supporting the VAACC’s mission to connect, preserve, interpret, inform, and celebrate Virginia’s African American history, culture, and community. “We have a luncheon and awards ceremony,  gift baskets for raffle prizes, a beautiful golf course and an opportunity to support the VAACC and its mission,” Says Dr. Gregg. “Participants will also enjoy an opportunity to win $1 million if someone can hit a hole-in-one on Hole 18!”

On June 14, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., the VAACC site at 744 Hampshire Lane will feature a free outdoor performance by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s Brass Quintet. Attendees can enjoy live music in a family-friendly environment, with light refreshments provided.

Continuing the celebrations, the Virtual Artist Masterpiece Series will present the I. Sherman Greene Chorale, Inc. on June 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Zeiders American Dream Theater, located at 4509 Commerce Street. This free event includes a musical performance honoring Juneteenth, followed by a moderated discussion. Pre-registration is encouraged for in-person attendance.

On June 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the VBGIGs Annual Juneteenth festival will take place at the ViBe stage in the Art & Eco Market at Cypress & 19th Street. This event, presented in collaboration with the VAACC, the ViBe Creative District, and VBGIGS, will feature performances by solo international artist Maxmillion and Duane Smith with the Virginia Jazz Experiment band. The festival is free and open to the public, offering music, dance, and shopping opportunities.

Additionally, the VAACC is sponsoring a mural titled “Piece Quilt” by artist Steve Prince in Williamsburg, as part of its statewide effort to raise awareness for Black history in Virginia. This initiative is funded by the Virginia Tourism Corporation and facilitated by the City of Williamsburg Public Art Council.
