Valspar Championship Fans Shine Bright

by AAGD Staff

AAGD Reporter John Perry, while on his beat Saturday covering the Valspar Championship, bumped into several interesting fans who were each enjoying the balmy weather at this event, one of the premier stops on the PGA Tour. Known for its competitive field and vibrant atmosphere, the tournament took place from March 19–22 at Innisbrook Resort Copperhead Course, a challenging and scenic venue located just outside Tampa, Florida.

Meet Norris Horton (pictured left) and John at the Valspar Championship during Saturday’s third round. Born in Winter Haven, FL, Norris attended Jewett High School and graduated in 1961. The agile 83-year old is the proud father of three children, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He lived in New Haven, CT, for 40 years and is a retired Deputy Sheriff of 25 years. A former president of the Pro Duffers Golf Club Norris also served as president of the Knickerbockers Gofl Club. He now works out of Willowbrook Golf Course in Winter Haven with a youth golf organization.

The Copperhead Course is widely respected by players for its tree-lined fairways, rolling terrain, and demanding closing stretch known as the “Snake Pit,” which often determines the tournament’s outcome. Unlike many Florida courses, Copperhead features elevation changes and tight landing areas, requiring both precision and strategic shot-making.

The tournament’s history dates back to 2000, when it debuted as the Tampa Bay Classic. Over the years, it has undergone several name changes, reflecting different title sponsors, before becoming the Valspar Championship in 2014 through its partnership with Valspar, a global leader in paints and coatings.

Lee is a close friend of Mr. Horton and lives in Winter Haven, Fla., as well. Lee is a member of the Black Retired Brothers Golf Club and retired in 2018 from the Department of Justice DEA, Drug Enforcement Agency. He also played professional football for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1987 and was a defensive back at FSU college team under legendary coach Bobby Bowden.

Throughout its history, the event has attracted many of the world’s top golfers and produced memorable finishes. It has earned a reputation as a fan-friendly tournament with strong community involvement and a relaxed yet competitive environment.

Beyond the competition, the Valspar Championship plays a significant role in supporting local charities, contributing millions of dollars to organizations throughout the Tampa Bay area. Its combination of high-level golf, community impact, and a uniquely challenging course has helped solidify its place as a favorite among players and fans alike.

“Close, but not me,” says AAGD Reporter John Perry. Pictured above is John Parry the Englishman in first pairing during round three of the Valspar.

Each year, as the PGA Tour’s Florida swing continues, the Valspar Championship delivers exciting moments and showcases some of the best talent in the game, all set against the picturesque backdrop of one of Florida’s most distinctive courses.
