The President of the United Black Golfers Association (UBGA), Vernel Bennett, believes that if Tiger Woods isn’t able to come back from injuries suffered in a car accident earlier this week, the pro golfer’s legacy has been cemented.
The golf legend is now at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after undergoing surgery at Harbor UCLA hospital. Bennett shares his personal opinion in an AP News interview.
Bennett makes several good points about the golf great Woods.
Dr. Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer and interim chief executive of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, described Woods’ condition:
“Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopaedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by orthopaedic trauma specialists at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a level-1 trauma center. Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia.”
“Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”
Of Tiger, Bennet says, “He’s young and strong, he can come back.”
UBGA is a Laurelton, Queens (NY)-based group, and one of only a few co-ed clubs in the United States. Bennet is proud to head the organization which is more than just about golfing, but about networking, providing scholarships and learning for each other. To date, UBGA has provided scholarships to over 36 students, giving more than $24,800 in educational funds.
