An intern at the Cincinnati Open, Joshua Darst, tragically passed away late on Monday, August 18 during the final day of the tennis tournament. The 21-year-old fell from a motorized golf cart near the loading dock at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, according to People Magazine. Emergency responders were dispatched shortly after 11 p.m. Following the accident, Darst was rushed to West Chester Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Authorities confirmed the incident is under investigation and ruled it an accident. The coroner attributed the cause of death to head trauma.

Tournament organizers expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of their interns, describing Darst as a valued team member. They conveyed that the entire organization was devastated and extended heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Darst was a senior at Cornerstone University in Michigan where he was on a baseball scholarship. He had been pursuing a degree in sports management and was admired for his dedication both on and off the field.

Beyond his academic and athletic accomplishments, Darst was a beloved member of his local community. He worked at the Lakota Family YMCA in Ohio as a lifeguard before advancing to the roles of head guard and pool manager. The YMCA remembered him for his infectious smile, kind heart, and warm spirit, highlighting his dedication to teaching swim lessons and the friendliness he extended to everyone he met. Staff emphasized that Darst had a rare ability to make people feel welcome and valued.

Darst’s longtime pastor, who had baptized him as a child, also offered an emotional remembrance. He recalled meeting Joshua when he was seven years old and described the news of his passing as heartbreaking. He spoke of Darst’s growth over the years into a compassionate and thoughtful young man, expressing deep grief over the sudden loss.

Cornerstone University echoed the sentiments of the community by issuing a tribute to Darst. The school noted that he was a cherished member of their baseball team and announced plans to honor him during the academic year’s first chapel service.

In response to the tragedy, Darst’s parents revealed their intention to establish a baseball scholarship fund in his name at Cornerstone University. This effort aims to honor their son’s legacy and support future athletes who share his love for the game and his commitment to excellence.

As the Cincinnati Open continues, Joshua Darst’s passing serves as a solemn reminder of the human lives behind large events—individuals whose efforts quietly sustain major productions.
