A LEGACY REMEMBERED:

The Ben Davis Detroit OPEN Championship pays homage to the legacy of Ben Davis, a trailblazing figure in the golfing community. In 1968, Davis made history by becoming Rackham’s head professional, making him the first African American to hold such a position at a municipal golf course in the United States.

Davis’s golfing prowess shone brightly as he went on to win the Michigan Senior PGA Championship in 1974 and the U.S. National Senior Tournament in 1979. His achievements earned him a spot in the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 1992, and he was further honored with induction into the African American Golfers Hall of Fame in 2012. Even after his passing in 2013 at the age of 101, his legacy continues to inspire and pave the way for aspiring golfers of all backgrounds.

ELIGIBILITY AND CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS:

This prestigious tournament is open to all golfers who have reached their 18th birthday. The championship rounds are scheduled as follows:

  • ROUND 1: Saturday, September 16, 2023 – The first round kicks off with 100 contestants competing in 18 holes of stroke play. This round will have no cut, allowing all participants to showcase their skills.
  • ROUND 2: Sunday, September 17, 2023 – The second round continues with the same 100 contestants, but with new pairings for another 18 holes of stroke play.

FLIGHTS / DIVISION:

The competition is divided into several flights and divisions to ensure fair and exciting matchups:

  • Men / Championship and 1st Flight
  • Senior Division: Open to participants who have reached their 55th birthday
  • Super Senior Division: Open to participants who have reached their 65th birthday

First-round pairings will be finalized on Thursday, September 14th, adding to the anticipation and excitement building up to the championship rounds.

Rackham Golf Course, a historic Donald-Ross Classic course, will be hosting the championship. Situated conveniently next to the Detroit Zoo, this venue offers a picturesque setting for players and spectators alike. Golfers looking to improve their skills can visit Rouge Park Driving Range, where they can learn and perfect their game.

Chandler Park Golf Course, with its short and friendly layout, provides the perfect setting for a quick and enjoyable round of golf. Meanwhile, Rouge Park Golf Course, offering a well-conditioned course in a scenic environment, poses a challenge to golfers with its championship setup.
