On Saturday, June 4, 2022, Golf. My Future. My Game. and First Tee – Greater Washington, DC will host the Inaugural Charlie Sifford Cup at the National Links Trust Historic Langston Golf Course at 2600 Benning Rd. N.E. in Washington, DC.  This historic 18-Hole course was named after John Mercer Langston, the first African American elected into public office. The facility is a celebrated beacon of African American golf heritage and is located at the end of the D.C. Streetcar Line.

The inaugural 3-day event will kick off on Thursday, June 2, celebrating the legendary Mr. Sifford’s 100th birthday. Sifford, the first African American to play on the PGA Tour and the first African American to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, died on February 3, 2015, in Cleveland, Ohio.  His son, Charlie Sifford Jr., is confirmed to be in attendance.

“It’s going to be a very special weekend and everyone is excited about this celebration,” says Crag Kirby, founder of Golf. My Future. My Game. “Letters of invitation have been sent to players and things are coming together very nicely.” 

On Friday, June 3, several of Mr. Sifford’s golf artifacts will be memorialized and placed in the National Museum of African American History and Culture, a Smithsonian Institution museum established in 2003 and located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.  To date, the Museum has collected more than 40,000 artifacts representing the African American experience, from the Colonial era of slavery to the election of the nation’s first African American president. most certainly, the items of Charlie Sifford will be a must-see collection.

The Inaugural event’s festivities will conclude on Saturday, June 4, with the Charlie Sifford Cup golf tournament.  The Ryder Cup-style tournament will tee off at 8:00 am EST and feature 12 youth players from Golf. My Future. My Game. and Oakland-based California ACE Kids Golf and 12 Players from The First Tee-Greater Washington, D.C.  Both boys and girls will play side-by-side, on the same course.  Spectators are welcomed at no charge.  Registration is requested and will open soon at the website. 

Immediately following the tournament an awards reception and luncheon will be held on the grounds of the Historic Langston Golf Course. The funds raised from this event will go towards supporting the philanthropic work of Golf. My Future. My Game. and First Tee – Greater Washington, DC.
