Blog: November 2011

The summer months keep me pretty active and busy running a golf course which has now been around for 65 years. It is an awesome responsibility to keep the legacy of what my father along with my mother created here in East Canton, Ohio in Clearview Golf Club and one I do not take lightly.

My brother as the course superintendent and member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) has responsibility of maintaining the course. The course superintendent in my opinion is far more important than the golf professional – so I have the utmost respect for those who maintain any golf course.

I, on the other hand, work a great deal on creating programs here at Clearview. This summer we started the Clearview H.O.P.E (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program which is a golf program geared solely to women veterans.

If you go to the Clearview Legacy Foundation on Facebook, you will be able to see some photos from our program during the summer. If you go to the USGA.org website and search for women veterans – you will also see more photos.

The exciting part of this program is that we are reaching out to the military female veterans to get them involved with the game of golf and using golf as that therapeutic tool we all enjoy. The instructional program is at no cost to our women veterans as not to leave anyone out who would benefit from such a wonderful recreational sport as golf.

Our core group of women are reaching out to other women veterans and have adopted a veterans family for Thanksgiving and will be doing the same for Christmas. They feel they have benefited so much from our Clearview H.O.P.E program that they want to give back and help their military sisters.

If anyone wishes to know more about our program, please do not hesitate to contact me. One of the missions of the Clearview Legacy Foundation is to educate and this we are able to do through our H.O.P.E program.

I am so proud of our young African America female golfers who are becoming beacons of light for our young girls in golf. Congratulations to both Mariah Stackhouse who will be going to Stanford and to Ginger Howard who plans to go the route of the LPGA Tour.

Also if anyone knows of other high school girls with good academic records, do let me know as I have a few college coaches who have contacted me as they are looking at making their teams more diverse.

Keep practicing!!
