Here’s something you don’t want to miss this year: the Advocates Pro Golf Association’s mini tour (APGA). This event is gaining lots of eyeballs and is watched by hundreds of thousands each season. Established in 2008 as a non-profit organization with the mission to bring greater diversity to the game of golf, it has continued to do exactly that and is bursting at the seams with great players.
The circuit is providing more professional playing opportunities for minorities. Although it’s been an uphill journey for CEO Ken Bentley, he has persevered, mostly in anonymity, while bringing sponsorship and noted exposure to support this tour. It was in 2021 when the Farmers Insurance Open offered a special exemption to APGA standout Kamaiu Johnson. Bentley’s efforts for the Los Angeles, California-based organization have now also gained the APGA a chance to take a far bigger stage. After the Farmers Insurance Open finishes on Saturday, the APGA will be on Golf Channel on Sunday when it plays the Torrey Pines’ South Course in the final round of its 36-hole event, called APGATOUR at the Farmers Insurance Open (the PGA Tour event wrapping up the previous day). All eyes will be watching to see who the rising star will be. So stay tuned.
